[Personality]

Quote:
Hakim is more or less a complicated man—a man built on paradoxes and ironies. At first glance, he may seem like the no good brother of a well respected man, but contrary to first impressions, Hakim is well respected in his own right, especially by the men of Ahestere's fighting population. A trained soldier, a fine marksman, and an excellent swordsman, Hakim has led men and has earned their respect through his decisiveness and strength. On the field, he is a pillar of strength and a rallying point that inspires loyalty and dedication. He has a charisma that makes men willing to die for his cause, a silver tongue that can tell the truth brutally or gloss the most harrowing.

As a friend, Hakim is fierce. It may be hard to gain his approval at first, but once earned, there is no swaying him otherwise. Perhaps this is why the deadliest sin you can commit against Hakim is to betray his trust.

But on the other side of the coin is a different man with a different reputation. As a family man, Hakim may not be the most monogamous. He has had many lovers and has never been faithful to any of them... except one, his long-time mistress who's more of a dear friend with benefits than a woman he loves. Of course, his wife knew this about him and the good woman that she was, Arilda accepted it in Hakim without question. Perhaps that was why he was so fond of her. As a father, Hakim is less than attentive. Not fully indifferent, but not affectionate either. Whatever the case, though, he is respectful outside the realm of fidelity. Hakim has done right by his family, providing for them and keeping them safe. He has never raised a hand in anger to anyone in his family, nor has he ever wanted to. As brought upon by his time as a soldier, the idea of duty and honor holds itself in high esteem in Hakim's lost of priorities.

As an enemy, Hakim is deadly. Like a snake underneath the grass, his charm will lure you, but his fangs will cut deep into your flesh and destroy you from the inside out.

As a brother, he is far worse. Resentful, is the word for it. After all his life had been spent being in Aashiq's dark and looming shadow. As a man with pride, a man who wants to be known for his own merit and not those he lacks in comparisson to his brother, Hakim distances himself from Aashiq both emotionally and physically. It's for the best, especially to those around him for the air becomes toxic when Hakim and Aashiq are in the same room. Disapproval flies like sparks of black powder and a fight is never a long way away. It stems from their different minds when it comes to rule. While Aashiq is a more careful and deliberative man, Hakim sees himself as a man of action who's immediate decison must come in a snap lest time be wasted in meaningless contemplation. Still, whatever disagreements he and Aashiq have, the only common thing they share is loyalty to House Linnet and pride in the glory of Ahestere. Hakim has always felt that he could rule better than his brother can.

Regardless of his intention or better side, Hakim is still is less popular than the Golden Boy of Lismore and Ahestere. But he has accepted this, for now. He believes that a time will come when the winds of favor change in his direction.

[History]
Quote:
Hakim does not like thinking about his early childhood. Born the second son of Lord Jabir Linnet, and his wife Josephine, he was often times overlooked. His father was unaffectionate to begin with and his mother did not bare the affirmation he needed in those days. Even from his birth, Hakim was considered the spare. The less important son who's sole purporse was to support Ahestere's future Province Lord.

While Aashiq was kept close to his father's side, groomed to become the next Lord Linnet, Hakim was cast away from an early age and sent to foster with the Al-Zayn of Susa. Hakim was was eight at the time and had been scared of leaving home so soon but his father took him aside and told him that it was all so that he could better himself and prove a worthy son and a capable brother. Of course, none of this made any sense to Hakim at the time, but he did as he was told, if only with a heavy heart.

Growing up with House SanJar, Hakim became closer to his Hazir roots, learning the customs and traditions that grew fainter and fainter as one traveled further west in Ahestere. Hakim learned their language, their religion and philosophies. He travelled with the family on their visits to Old Hazir and became a guest in the palaces of the Al-Zayn of Hazir.

In those days, Hakim prefered to stay in Susa where he was respected in his own right, not just treated like the second fiddle to Aashiq's great symphony. He abhored the adoration his elder brother was granted... and all for what? Because of the accident that was birth order. Even their younger brother, Osiris, worshiped Hakim like one of the Five. That automatically earned distaste form Hakim, who also resented such hero worship of a man he regarded as undeserving of it.

The home he'd been so reluctant to leave became the hell-hole he was so reluctant to return to. The SanJars became more of a family to Hakim than his own, and the SanJar brothers may not have been his brothers by birth but they were by bond. Now that Hakim had tasted what it was like to be his own man, he knew he could never step under Aashiq's shadow ever again.

No one in the family saw his concerns as reasonable... no one except Reia. Perhaps it was because of their closer ages, or the fact that she was the only person that Hakim could actually keep company with in their household, but Reia never dismissed Hakim's feelings as that of the jealous second son. Rather she saw it for what it genuinely was, a man trying to get recognition in his own right.

When Hakim grew old enough to carry his sword and use it too, he was trained alongside the calvary of Susa, battling raiders, protecting caravans and dispensing the King's peace in the name of the SanJar. This developed a military mentality in Hakim. The rules of the desert, survival, and battle became etched in his mind and in his manner. He became disciplined to the point of being rigid. He tolerated nothing but perfection from his men and pushed them as far as he pushed himself. The only aspects Hakim was not so principled in was that of drink and women... but then again, what soldier was truly immune to such lures. This rose as a problem when at 17, his father died and Aashiq took on the lordship of Lismore and Ahestere, and Hakim was recalled home to Lismore. He had already married a woman from the south, Arilda, one who would follow his word and would give him some modicum of respect, and had to move her back home to Lismore. This didn't stop him from playing around, but he always came home to her.

It was like that until the day she died. Four children later, Arilda succumbed to the plague, quickly followed by their eldest son, Joneil. To the world, Hakim was not much affected by the death. He still had his dalliances and he still provoked his brother's temper, for he would rather die then give anyone the satisfaction of seeing him weakened by his family's death. In private, though was another matter. He grieved dearly for his firstborn son.

With the lack of sons in Aashiq's branch of the family, Hakim has proven to be the heir presumptive of his brother's title. Though he believes he can do a much better job than his brother, proving to be a stronger and more decisive leader with greater battle experience, he did not want to gain the title this way. By default. Hakim now aims to gain the favor of his fellow lords and the people he will rule. Maybe then he'd finally be known as more than Aashiq Linnet's little brother.

As of now he stands disinherited and furious, his eldest son now being shipped off to marry beneath his station. Hakim's feathers have been ruffled by his brother and he will not stand for that.

Hakim retreated to his room, the halls were darkened, everyone was still celebrating downstairs when he had fled through a door. His false smile and demeanor of brevity disappearing immediately. This won't stand Aashiq, he swore silently to himself. As he reached his room his opened the door and entered into what was his home, he knew this would be the last time he would be allowed here without spilling blood. He moved to his closet and tore off the celebratory clothing he had donned, Hakim was not in the mood for any of it.

He reached for a long green woolen cloak, a warm garment one that could shield him from the cool desert night. He would go somewhere, he didn't know which hold would accept him, he would convince some banner lord to take him in. Hakim could not be the only one to think Aashiq was directing Ahestere in the wrong direction, he simply couldn't be. How could anyone want their beautiful kingdom inherited by a foreign spoiled brat!?

A man was waiting for him, an elder steward of House Linnet. He had been there since the birth of Aashiq, Hakim and Osiris, the reign of Jabir and others. And he sat there patiently until Hakim had noticed him. Janos Hunyadi was a very old man, and he had been present at the party. Janos sat in a chair at the other end of the room in the darkness.

Hakim had felt another presence, a palpable one. "How long have you been here, Janos?" He turned and saw Janos, and somehow he knew it was him all along.

Through a wheeze Janos had answered, "Since Aashiq made the announcement, I sent for someone to arrange a horse to be made available outside the main gates."

Hakim stepped forward, grinning, so he wasn't the only disgruntled one, "Why, Janos?"

"Because I'm a man of tradition, Hakim, and I made your father a promise that I would give you a chance," Janos made for the door, albeit with a cane and a limp, "This is your chance to set things right, but do not count on me for anything further." Janos reached the door and opened it once again, a dim light illuminated the room.

"Goodbye Hakim." Janos closed the door behind him, leaving Hakim in darkness.

"Thank you Janos."

Hakim moved towards the window and opened it. The sky was clear and dark, and the air was cold. He gave his future one more thought, and his path was certain. He climbed over the edge and disappeared into the desert.
