Would You Like to Stay With Me? (5/9, lunch, Catriona/Arianne/ Isabelle)

Isabelle rose as her guests arrived and moved first to hug her niece. “Arianne, I’m glad you came. And Catriona, it’s good to see you again!” Isabelle moved to hug the younger woman. “And you look ever so lovely. Come, I’ve got an excellent lunch prepared and we can talk about possible arrangements!”

Isabelle had to admit she was excited. She moved to the table to sit, watching both of the other woman join her. Catriona was as much her niece as Aurora, and Isabelle would love both to get to know her better and allow her the chance to better know her cousins. Catriona and Kenna’s relationship might benefit as well, if Isabelle found ways to have the two interact. There was no reason they should hate each other so much.

She looked at the table spread before them. Lamb rosemary with raspberries and grapes, fresh baked bread and a variety of cheeses. A potato soup with onions and wild mushrooms, a grilled squash split open and stuffed with crabmeat... it was far more food than the three could eat but the smells made Isabelle’s mouth water.

“Wine?” she offered, lifting the pitcher to fill her glass.

The thought of residing permanently in the capitol appealed to Cat greatly, and when her mother had mentioned that her great-aunt had offered to ward her, excitement had taken hold of her soul and refused to let go. This was where she belonged, where she had known she had belonged since her first visit at the age of fifteen. To be able to participate in court life on a regular basis was everything she could hope for, and she knew that with her regal manner and natural charm, she would have the entire court on their knees before they knew what hit them.

Catriona Montrose was a force to be reckoned with. She just needed the chance to prove it.

And Kenna would hate having her around. That was another advantage of staying. She could hardly wait to tell her cousin the news, to smirk as her mouth dropped to the floor in shock and horror. Oh yes, that would be delightful.

Malicious thoughts were pushed to the back of her mind as she and her mother greeted her great-aunt, and Cat smiled genuinely when the woman complemented her on her beauty. “You look quite stunning yourself, Aunt Isabelle,” she replied truthfully. Both princesses had aged quite admirably, and the young woman hoped that she would as well when her days of youth were past.

Following her great-aunt over to the table, Catriona sat down, arranging the folds of her emerald skirts artfully around her, and glanced over at the feast that had been prepared. Despite the butterflies fluttering haphazardly in her stomach, she realized that she was quite hungry and the aromas wafting through the air smelled delicious.

“Yes, please,” she said when their hostess offered wine, and once her glass was filled, she added: “You have a very beautiful place here, Aunt Isabelle. The decorating is exquisite, from what I have seen so far.”

Isabelle reached for each glass and poured with a skill that came from doing such for her husband and family for the last thirty years. As she finished, she passed the first glass to Arianne, and then the second Catriona and then poured another for herself. The wine was a sweet white, imported from Caelian, light and tangy and one of her favorites. It would go well with the meal she’d had set for her family.

“It’s good to have you back in the capital, Catrionia. I know how much you enjoyed it here before, staying with your uncle. I’ll get to the point, as I’m sure Arianne has already told you. I’ve offered to let you stay here with my husband and myself so that you can stay at court if you wish.”

She had no doubt her grand-niece would say yes. Unless Cat suddenly had a lover back in Arbrecht, Isabelle knew the woman preferred court. And even if she had a lover, Isabelle thought Cat would drop him like a bad habit for a chance to stay at the capital. “Connections are always good for you and your family. And my daughter, Peregrine, might like the company of one close to her age.”

Catriona smiled at her great-aunt as she sipped her wine, delighting in its sweet but savory taste. She already knew the purpose of this visit, but she had not expected to hear it confirmed so quickly and had braced herself for a few moments of trivialities before the subject was broached. Which was the main reason she had commented on the décor, something that generally she would not do.

And yet Aunt Isabelle jumped immediately to the heart of the matter, which pleased the young woman immensely. Cat did not know her well, and if she was always so direct, the two of them would get along just fine. She was not all that certain about Peregrine, but if one of the conditions of staying at court was to befriend her, then befriend her Catriona would … even if it was complete pretense on her part. Then again, the two of them might get along famously.

She turned her blue eyes to her mother. “Yes, Mother has informed me of your offer and ...” her attention switched back to her great-aunt, “... I am honored by your generosity and most graciously accept.”

Isabelle had known Catriona would accept long before she brought the matter up with Arianne. Cat was, as far as Isabelle could remember, a woman who fit perfectly with the court. Even her rivalry with Kenna was something most women at court did, and rivalries were part of the game. Kenna and Cat were too similar... but then, Isabelle hoped over time the stay would resolve those differences.

“Wonderful!” she exclaimed. “I know you will enjoy it here. As a councilman’s wife and a princess besides, I feel one of my duties will be to revive the atmosphere of the court, and I believe you’ll be able to help me with that. You have a style and a grace that clearly comes from your Fontenot mother,” she raved, flashing a smile at her favorite niece before looking back to Cat. “If I am honest, I hope you can wed close to court so that you can stay here always. The court, and the king, needs the support of his blood right now, for many reasons.”

It never hurt to remind the woman she wasn’t only royalty, she was a direct cousin of the king himself. “I also heard your brother will be staying with the king as his companion. I think that will pleased your Lord father,” Isabelle added. “It seems the Green is finally becoming more than just the backward city of Arbrecht.”

Perhaps Arianne was no longer quite so upset about having had to wed there.
