Appearance: Astera stands at 5’7” and carries herself with grace and dignity. There are those that comment on the sheen of her soft dark hair, the fathomless dark eyes that seem to look through a person to see into their very soul but perhaps what most people notice about this young woman is that she has a great pair of legs.

Personality: Astera is a proud and passionate woman, the combination of which has given her the reputation of being ‘difficult’. She tolerates no slight towards her family though her methods of retaliation are never direct. She is a woman who hides her true thoughts close to her heart and guards them carefully. She puts great thought and effort into her physical appearance, vanity factoring heavily into her pride and favors expensive and exotic things. While this covers the standard silks and perfumes, Astera has become something of a collector of ancient texts as well, a hobby that is noticeably at odds with the shallow and self-centered image she tries to present.

On the opposite side of the coin Astera feels her emotions keenly, though she has learned to guard them when needed just as she does her thoughts. She is easily excited, easily pleased, and just as easily wounded. She burns both sides of the proverbial candle frequently, and is constantly burned for her efforts. This could be a reason for the mask she so often wears; to show her true self is to invite pain and she does not handle loss of control very gracefully. Honor to her family is of utmost importance to her and she would never do anything to intentionally bring dishonor or shame to her family. She may not always agree with Lord Linnet’s decisions but she always honors his wishes, knowing that his actions are in the interest of the family as a whole. Astera is extremely studious and considers education of utmost importance. For the most part she finds children much easier to get along with then people her own age.

History: Astera was ten years old when her parents fell ill. She did not understand at the time why she and her brother were forced to go live with her father’s cousin and his young family and she deeply resented it, feeling abandoned and unwanted. Out of spite and childish anger she refused to go into mourning when the news came that first her mother and then her father succumbed to the illness and passed away. She was treated fairly and with respect and grew up happy. She loves her younger cousins and has always been willing to help out with them. She grew up close to them, much prefering the company of her cousins to that of her brother. She loves her brother of course, deep down. Somewhere. But she finds herself constantly aggravated by him.

She was educated with the best tutors that could be found, the same as her cousins had been and found a love in the power knowledge lent her. She found a particular love for languages, thrilled by the words and meanings of other cultures and the dialects within her own. On her fifteenth name day Lord Linnet gifted her with an old book that had been purchased in the bazaar. It was child's book of tales with many vibrant and richly colored pictures but more fascinating then that is the language the stories are written in, one she could not even read. It remains today as one of her most treasured possessions along with the jewelry that had once belonged to her mother. As soon as she entered the University she began to give back to the city, tutoring young ladies who could not afford the university and younger children. She considers education a form of wealth and it is for the betterment of Lismore and Ahestere as a whole.

Perhaps due to her love of languages both written and spoken and the cultures that have developed them, Astera is known for her ability to tell stories and it is a talent that has endeared her to a good many people in Lord Linnet's household, especially the children. She took up dancing soon after she arrived in Lord Linnet's house as a way to escape the turmoil she felt as a result of her perceived abandonment. In those early days she would constantly push herself to the point of exhaustion, leaving no room or time for thoughts of her parents, leaving no time for the tears. Soon the need to escape turned into a true passion for it. While she prefers the exotic solo dance style common in Ahestere she also loves the ballroom style favored in the courts, finding the challenge of dancing with another in equal parts fascinating and frustrating.


Writing Sample: Astera pushed back a dark lock of hair back behind her ear and leaned forward, fixing her serious brown eyes on the child before her. She watched as the child scratched the letters carefully onto the parchment with charcoal. The girls tongue was stuck out in concentration as she traced the letters deliberately, her small hand pressing so hard on the paper it shook.

“You are doing well, Elnaz. You practiced at home like I asked”

The girl didn’t look up but the corner of her mouth twitched up at the praise. As soon as she finished the letter she was on she set the stick of charcoal down and looked up at Astera with hopeful eyes. Astera reached over and took the paper to look over. It had the look of a child’s handwriting, but given that a child had written it, that was expected. But most importantly it was completely legible. She smiled and turned the paper towards the girl.

“I am very proud of you, Elnaz. You have just written your name,”
