House Storm

The Storms are an ancient royal house, who trace their ancestry and founding back to ancient Arbrecht war heroes such as Sigmund the Stormlord, who led the conquest of the Tivark kingdom and established the Kelaillan Stormlands, and Torygg Stormcaller who united the peoples of ancient Arbrecht. The Storms rule their island lands from the stronghold of Strun Bah Qo in the western mountains, over the united houses of Kelailles. Their words are "Calm Before the Storm."

The Storms and their vassals follow their own religion, the Way of the Storm, and are held together by ancient traditions foreign to even the rest of Arbrecht. The Stormlands bear a higher percentage of a militant population than any other hold in the kingdom, being descended from great warriors and a culture well-tested in combat. Some of the most remarkable knights and highly disciplined soldiers of the entire kingdom are found in Kelailles.

Vassal Houses

The Reynes are the longest serving banner to the Storms of Kelailles, and the second most influential house in the Stormlands political scene. Founded by one of the original four Chosen, Lord Ser Henrik Reyne, they occupy the castle of Skyguard on the eastern inland. They sit at the head of the hold's councils, second only to the Storms themselves. They hold jurisdiction over the wealthiest and most vast harbour and port in Kelailles, and the liveliest place for trade ships coming and going. A good majority of the hold's fleet sets anchor near Skyguard in times of peace. Their words are "First and Foremost."

"Gore Them All", no truer words used to describe perhaps the most vicious and powerful, second to House Storm, in all of Kelailles. Originally a clan of warriors that came to Kelailles over 700 years ago, they earned their fame, and banner during the first war against the Harcourts. War is in their blood, and not surprisingly the maintain the largest standing army in Kelailles. Led by the mighty Edmund Hollen, known for his fury and power on the field of battle, they are a force to be reckoned with. House Hollen is however not known for breeding knights, to them being a Knight is seen as going against tradition of fighting, and to be a knight is to be weak in their eyes.

The Cains serve as the Lord Protectors of the Stormlands, sworn to the defence and preservation of their homelands; a title they earned during the third and final Kelailles-Frysbruck War in 448 BF, when their lord Ser Kevan and his company of knights successfully defended the coastal island of Oldshore against the overwhelming numbers of the Harcourts. Their words are "Guarding the Peace."

Lesser Houses

Every township in Kelailles answers to the call of a native line of nobles, there are four towns in the hold. The most well-known is that of Oldshore that occupies the south-western most settlement in the Stormlands, ruled over by House Tor and their lord Ser Konal. Oldshore won fame as an unshakable bastion of defence in the third Kelailles-Frysbruck war and has been fortified as a purposeful means of defence since those days. The small island itself holds many war memorials from the days of the great wars and is a tourist attarction in of itself.

The Ossents made a name for themselves in the midst of the plague in Kelailles, when their lord Alaric was taking economical measures alongside Lord Ser Mathos Storm to combat the effects of the plague. Lord Alaric led his clan in support of the Storm's campaign alongside the Fitzwulfs, where his son Arlan saw a quick rise to fame and knighthood. Being the site of the hold's most expansive gold mining operation, the Ossents of Westvale have the public image of a rather wealthy house and are associated with much of the island's banking.

The canal-town of Oakhaven, ruled by House Myrkhall is the western access point to the main Storm stronghold of Strun Bah Qo, and sees a high-level of activity from visitors, particulary for the purpose of political callings to the Storms. Lady Astrid Myrkhall rules the town, in the place of her young brother Einar. House Myrkhall has recently seen a rise in prominence under it's lord-lady, and is one of the most favoured in the Stormlands despite it's minor size.

House Thangbrand bear the strongest resemblance to the rest of Arbrecht, and rule the seat of Wintergate in the far north of the Stormlands under the shadow of the Shiverpeak mountains. The cold makes for hard men and the intense winter-weather of the northern corner of the island has forged an incredible clansmen like people of the Thangbrands.

House Erland rule over arguably the most pleasant scenic district of the Stormlands, which earned their town it's name of Rosemere. The ruling house and residents of Rosemere are a widely devout people, and host a variety of their own services to the following of the Way, and often work in conjunction with the Wise order to uphold the island's education in traditions. It has become a tradition in the family for at least one of their blood each generation to devote themselves to the Way of the Storm.

The Osteins of Eastwatch are a small line of nobles, but they are not without their own fame, held in no small part by Ser Axell, who earned the nickname 'the Light of the East' in the war of the Wolf and the Rose. They sit watch over the east, commanding the small yet highly defensive lighthouse town of Eastwatch. They were thrust into the spotlight of court attention at the end of the last war, when Grimnir Storm murdered the Lord Mikkel's sister, his wife.

The Island Hold

The Stormlands

Kelailles was once the eastern coast of Arbrecht, before a tectonic shift resulted in it breaking off from the mainland to become an island of it's own. It is still considered a part of Arbrecht despite it being under a state of independant rule since the days of it's split and to this day. Kelailles is commonly called the Stormlands, named as such for it's ruling lords and for it's weather.

The island unlike the northern mainland is rather unpredictable in weather, and not subject to the dull consistency of snow, ice and cold, being so, it welcomes a lot of visitors from the Arbrecht mainland seeking a break from the norm. It has an inconsistant stormy season that lasts year long, that even the Storms themselves find hard to predict. The island is composed of hilled-plains and forestry, with a handful of thick mountain ranges to offer backdrops to the general lay of land, one range is occupied as House Storm's base and another a religious site. Lots of interconnected inland rivers and lakes make for diverse and stunning landscapes across the entire hold.


Settlements

The island over it's history has raised four strongholds within the hold itself. It has the main castle and the seat of the ruling House Storm's authority, Strun Bah Qo, which sits atop a mountain among mountains in the west overlooking the hold's main city of commerce. The castle of Skyguard sits on the eastern inland controlling the main port of the island. The largest of the four the Hornburg commands the territories of the north; and High Harmony covers the south, commanding the defence of the Pillars and the access to the island from south.

There are six recognised towns in Kelailles, these are generally under the jurisdiction of the lords of their particular quadrant. The crossing-town of Faldragon and the canal-town of Oakhaven fall under the immediate jurisdiction of Strun Bah Qo. Skyguard rules over the town of Rosemere, and the Hornburg over the snow-covered north where Wintergate sits among the Shiverpeaks. High Harmony keeps watch over the settlements that surround the holy site of the Pillars as well as that of the Wise. House Ossent the newly established banner, has sole rule over their hometown of Westvale. The island towns of Oldshore and Eastwatch, though they are part of Kelailles, operate individually, though still under the authority of the Storms.


Landmarks

The Pillars were founded in the days of King Erik the Young, when the Way of the Storm was in it's early days of practice. The natural tranquility of the site and the four walls of mountain, earned it a full year of patronage from King Erik, where he spent a year in meditation. The site is considered a holy site and is a place of worship, and therefore the freedom to bear arms is relinquished upon arrival. There is only one dwelling in the vicinity of the Pillars, the Tower of the Wise, which stands on the boundary. There are people who have chosen to live close to the site who are especially devout to the Way, these peoples are known as the sahsunaar and they guard the paths.

The Field of the Fallen is a great span of grassy plain at the centermost point of the hold, it was the site of the great passing ceremony at the climax of the Ernsaw plague in 240, where over two thousand bodies of the fallen were cremated and sent on to the Eternal Storm.


Kelaillan Council

Below the authority of the ruling Stormlord is the Kelaillan council. When pressing matters of the hold are to be discussed a council of lords from every noble house is called together in the halls of Strun Bah Qo. The traditional council method involved petitions and controlled turn-by-turn debates; but those methods were abolished upon Lord Eldric's rise to power; now matters are debated in free-form debate moving from topic to topic in a more interpersonal manner. The council is made up of lords and retainers from each banner on the island, at least one member of every house must be present for a council to be officially put into motion. Current key members of the council include and are not limited to Master Kalervo Storm, Lord Ser Bjorn Storm, Lord Rickard Reyne, Lord Edmund Hollen, Lord Ser Harold Cain, Lord Alaric Ossent, in addition to the Lord of the Storm and the Chosen.

Culture

The Way of the Storm

Kelailles is the only hold in Arbrecht which doesn't follow the worship of The Hero, instead they follow the Way of the Storm, the Raad Se Strun. It has been the religion of Kelailles for eight hundred years. Founded formally by Queen Iona upon the ending of the War of the Two Queens, the religion welcomed a new level of ancestral reverance and loyalty, and the people of the Stormlands developed a new found respect for their histories and people.

The Way of the Storm follows no specific deities or icons, but ancestors, forefathers and bloodlines. Main avatars of reverance are found in Sigmund, the founder of House Storm and Kelailles; Torygg, the first King of all of Arbrecht; Thrond, the warrior king who led the Arbrectians into the Vandermark; Magnus, the young king who revitalised the Stormlands; and Reoth, who led the first Chosen knights.

The people of Kelailles hold storms as auspicious events, and will celebrate at the instance of a powerful storm. They rarely damage the countryside or hurt those who follow the Way, it is common belief across the kingdoms that the rulers of the Stormlands hold an ancient power, though it is not acknowleged - an ancient power to ward off the common peril brought by storms. No one of the blood of House Storm has ever died as a result of a storm, a fact the house takes great pride in, and counts it as a blessing from their ancestors above.

When a follower of the Way dies, they are not buried, instead they are cremated on an open pyre. Their spirit is believed to break free of the constraints of the human body in the form of spirit essence in the smoke, and ascend to the Eternal Storm, the Unahzaal Strun above, to join the Stormlords of old, and their brethren. When they join the Eternal Storm that is the sky, they take residence in the clouds and influence the fates, the favour and blessings of their living brethren below until the end of time, they become a part of the storms that grace the life of the living, in a land that can only be described as valhalla to the people of the Way.

With the onset of the plague, and the death and destruction it brought the people of the Stormlands, a new phrase was coined by the order of the Wise, "Zin faal Sizaan", which is translated to "Honour the Lost." It has become a frequently used phrase by the followers of the Way, when discussing the dead.

The Lord of the Storm

The Lord of House Storm, is styled the Lord of the Storm, and he is the de facto ruler of Kelailles and it's people. They are locally held in regard reserved for kings, which the lords of Kelailles once were. When a new Stormlord is to ascend to power they go through an enthronement and crowning before the eyes of the public. Tradition never died in Kelailles, even with the end of their line of kings.

The Crown of Storms, is an ancient artifact which original name is the Du'ul do Strun. It is the crown which has been passed down from king to king, from lord to lord for a millennia, since it's forging in the founding years of the Storm house under the direction of Sigmund. It is a banded crown of golden iron, it depicts antlered-lightning, enjoining the sigil and element associated with the Storm coat of arms.


The Order of the Wise

The Wise, also known called the Wuthaak, are the loremasters of Kelailles and devout keepers of the Way of the Storm. The head of their order is titled revakin, or master in the modern tongue. These loremasters lead lives of scholars, maintaining the great library of Kelailles in their tower at the Pillars, which houses the only surviving records of the old tongue of Arbrecht, a language they try to keep familiar with as time goes on, yet very few members can speak what remains of the language with fluency. The Wise fulfil the role of tutors in Kelaillan society, and often travel across the island to hold seminars.


The Chosen Order

In the years following the Massacre at Landerfell, Queen Iona established an order of high knights whose purpose was to serve their king as armed protectors sworn to his safety. These knights became known as the Chosen, the Vahlok Zeymah in the old tongue. There were only ever four Chosen at any given time, one to guard to each direction the king could be assailed from is believed to have been the defining factor in the number.

Upon receiving their title and office, the Chosen are graced with a new sword, one of four famed blades of the Stormlords. Each represent a component of a storm, Rain, Wind, Lightning and Thunder, together they enjoin to guard their lord the overall storm. Legend has it that these blades were forged from the finest of all steels - of the great warhammer of Sigmund himself, though such a claim is reserved only to the legends.

Only the most devout followers of the Way and skilled of knights are permitted to consideration for a place in the Chosen; they are the best of the best in Kelailles, and a knightly pride of the island. The original purpose and role of the Chosen has fell into disuse in the past two hundred years, being that the line of kings ended. But they are finding themselves coming into being once more after all those years, as the wars and conflict return.


Knighthood

Knighthood is considered a high honour in Kelailles and only the best weapon artists, accomplished fighters, and proven leaders are ever knighted. There are perhaps only one hundred knighted warriors out of the whole population of Kelailles in the present, and most serve the role of generals or honour guards. The honour of being a knight is more than just a respected title and fighting role, but reverence, it is a hard fought and sought after accomplishment, and Kelaillan knights are often considered the best in Arbrecht.

The knights held in the highest regard in the history of Kelailles are Ser Reoth Storm, the first of the original Chosen, and Ser Prince Aenar, the second of the lordly line of Storms who won renown in the war against the Linchao. In current times, the two Chosen knights Ser Ragnar and Ser Betrand are considered the peak of Stormland fighting prowess.

The Stormlands use the genderless Ser style for their knights, unlike the rest of the kingdom who use a gender distinction.


Economy

The weather of Kelailles offers production in areas which normally Arbrecht just can't provide itself, the large forests and woods offer much in the departments of materials for fabrics and woodwork. The deep mountain ranges offer much in mining, and a variety of metals. Kelailles is home to a heavily-stylised steel working industry, particularly in the areas of war, such as battlemail, armour and weapons. There is a big foreign market in personal-stylised suits of armour. The island has a multitude of different wildlife, from bears and boars, to doves and sheep. Kelailles also enjoys a good source of trade from the Vandermark coming into Arbrecht from the east, with relationships in these regards going back for hundreds of years.

Military

Forces

Kelailles has a dense population for a hold so small, a beyond average percentage of which is serving in a military capacity - without tapping into acts of conscription and militias. Though this number is rarely spoken to outsiders for their impression of a higher strength. Stormlanders are a highly-tested militant people and proudly so, they always have been and always will be, and they have a history of many wars to their experience and credit.

Style is held in high importance on the island, they believe that it seperates them from the rest of the world. They are very sophiscated when compared to some other holds, particulary in Arbrecht; especially in terms of battle presence, they dress in flashy, yet still as practical as mainstream armour. Flamboyant weaponplay is also a part of the norm, more well developed in the leading families, but every fighting man of Kelailles has a certain flow in how their combat works against another hold's that seems to be very exquisite and well-practised, that goes beyond just the rank and file training.


Army

The army of Kelailles sits at a comfortable size of six-thousand fighting men and women all told, composed of the garrisons and armies of all the lords across the island hold. House Storm takes pride in having elite ranks of warriors, famed both as infantry and cavalry. The Storm's personal soldiers may only stand some two-thousand in number all told, but they are some of the most exceptional forces across the entire kingdom. House Hollen commands the largest single fighting force, being the primary source of manpower in Kelailles. The Storms currently have an elite unit of fifty knights in service, who shadow the Storm Marshal in his missions known as the Stormknights, they have been tasked with keeping the peace under the command of Ser Ragnar Storm.


Navy

The navy of Kelailles numbers some four-hundred ships, the main combat force is composed mainly of galleys, supported by the swifter compliment of longships, with around four-thousand marines in service at this time. The Storms being the lords of an island rely heavily on the strength of their navy to remain in a strong position, coastal raids are not uncommon, and the threat of piracy has been on the rise with more and more promise of war, yet the Storm fleet only considers such minor problems as sport for their marines. The flagship of the fleet, the Maelstrom, won itself a name of renown and infamy under the command of Ser Wilhelm Storm, by breaking the Harcourt fleet in the war for the north.

History of the Stormlands

The Founding of House Storm

It all began with the rise of Sigmund, known as the Stormlord. He led a host in battle against the Tivarks of Arbrecht, conquering their kingdom's holdings in the east. Victories amounting to a years work into the campiagn and he formerly established his own house and raised his own standard, an armoured fist, a symbol of strength and power, wielding lightning. Declaring himself as an independant and warring kingdom he furthered his campaign, driving the Tivarks into a state of decline and helplessness.

King Sigmund ordered the raising of the Storm stronghold of Strun Bah Qo in the midst of his success, in hopes to create a impregnable fall back and home to house his family for generations to come. He ordered the construction at the summit of a large bulk of mountain on the eastern coast of Arbrecht, dreaming of making it nigh unassailable.

In the years his castle was being raised he set on a punitive expedition to clean out his new lands of his rival, and secure the support of his new subjects and peoples. His enemies gave way before him and he quickly secured his rule over eastern Arbrecht. Within the next two decades he would drive the bitter and vengeful Tivark's into nothing, forcing what remained of their kind north into the frozen lands in total defeat.


The War of Conquest

With all the sudden shifts of dynamic in the world, and the recent high earthquake activity that had caused the Storm kingdom to splinter, Torygg Stormcaller, the reigning King set about a military conquest of the remaining lands of the north, to revitalise his kingdom. Leading a vast host over the course of two hard fought decades, and much like Sigmund he met success after success and won over the entireity of Arbrecht. Arbrecht for the first time in known history was united under the rule of a single house.


The Clash of Kings

In the years following the dominance of the Storm leadership, and winning the backing of all of Arbrecht's holdfasts. The new king, Thrond, set about furthering his house's success by attempting a conquer the lands of the Vandermark. Leading a mighty host of northmen he crossed the sea and landed on the grounds of the Old Gods.

The initial Vandermark war hosts underestimated the severity of the invasion initially and Thrond earned the nickname Thunderfist for his triumphs, he crushed his opposition in their repated attempts to throw him back for the first two years, dealing massive casualties all around and throwing the victory prospects in his favour.

It wasn't until the second year of the war that the King of the Vandermark realised the danger the Arbrecht host was posing. Over the next couple of years the two Kings would battle personally lead their armies to stalemates in the field, bringing Thrond's progress to a halt.

The fifth year of war and still no end was in sight, available reinforcements on both sides were beginning to reach a point of complete exhaustion. Thrond grew to the point of utter impatience and challenged his rival foreign king to a duel to the death, the winner would obviously shatter the morale of their rival's force and bring the war to a close.

The two kings battled over the course of three weeks, with growing intensity. Thrond was struck down finally, bested in a clean fight with his opponent, and sure enough his army's courage dissolved, and beat a hasty retreat back to their homeland. The King of the Vandermark permitted his body leave, commending the King on his ability in spite of his failure. The Storms never again sailed south to war.


The Massacre at Landerfell

Thrond Thunderfist's demise marked period of decline for the Storms. His son and heir, Hadvar lacked interest in the militant tradition of his house and let revolts overrun his holdings. The house lost its dominance Sigmund and Torygg had won, and fell back to a position weaker than it had known in centuries. King Hadvar fell under the spell of his queen, Ingrid, she was all he cared about.

Hadvar's teenage son Magnus, called together a force of clansmen having been rebuked for pursuing a resurgence of military power by his father. He led a cou d'etat and overthrew his father for the betterment of the house, who died in what was probably the shame of it soon after.

Now King Magnus set about restoring the strength of his kingdom, he rewon the support of his people and set about planning the restoration of the kingdom, and reconquering the territories his father had abandoned. He married his childhood sweetheart Iona, and made her his queen. They made sure they had an uncontestable heir before Magnus set about his long-term war plans.

Magnus was a popular king, being young and so inspiringly devoted in his conduct won him the loyalty of his armies, and they went to war on the account of his purpose and promise. He led the army alongside his uncle Reoth. He struck out northwest, meeting some resistance that gave way before the sudden on set of his host. Within a couple of months Ragnar had secured the holdings that bordered Ernsaw. He then struck out at the territories of Maldenham, fighting with the clan Montrose. The clansmen put up a solid fight, and managed to wound the young Storm King in battle, forcing him to reel back. The clansmen didn't have the resources behind them that the Storm army did, Ser Reoth sacked Maldenham and spared the occupants, allowing the Montroses to keep their holdings.

It wasn't long before Magnus' wounds were healed and he could operate alongside his uncle once more. The two cut a path towards Landerfell (present day Westerland) meaning to seize the hold on their way to Fyrsbruck to isolate the mountain lair of Mier, cutting it off from everywhere else. They met little resistance along the way this time as townships joined the fold. The Hullands of Landerfell surrendered without a fight, agreeing to rejoin the Storm King.

Little did Magnus know, that he had been deceived. He led a contingent into Landerfell to meet with it's lord Bhur Hulland, but was prompty shut inside and slaughtered as he met the man. His uncle had to rally the main army outside to withstand the onset of the Hulland army once he realised what had happened, but was beaten off brutally in a hasty retreat eastward.


The War of the Two Queens

Knowing Magnus would be dead, his mother Ingrid, the architect of the whole thing usurped power in Strun Bah Qo in what only could have been a carefully planned scheme. She proclaimed herself Queen, and went about dealing with everyone remotely responsible for her husband Hadvar's fall. She targetted Queen Iona and her infant son, but she had been smuggled out by some loyal retainers of King Magnus during the coup.

Queen Iona escaped Kelailles with the help of a castle guard, Henrik Reyne, and she and her son were safely led off of the island, where they met with Ser Reoth, who was a towering fury. The Storm army fell back to Ernsaw to regroup and nurse their wounds.

Queen Ingrid with the help of her brother, joins her new power in an alliance with House Hulland, where she plans to wed Lord Bhur Hulland, who proclaims himself King of Arbrecht. The Hulland forces set forth from Landerfell to conquer Ernsaw. Ser Reoth having retreated to Ernsaw began setting his army to readiness for a move against Kelailles from the Ernsaw coast, when he received word of the Hulland advancement. He and the widow queen's protectors rally their host to meet the enemy in the field. Ser Reoth, Ser Ermot and Ser Thongar, three Storms ride to battle, leaving the young queen and her son under the protection of the guard Henrik and a small garrison.

The two forces met on a great vast plain not far from Ernsaw, where the Hullands offered the flayed corpse of their King as a gift to the Storm host, vowing to do the same to them. The two armies clashed in an increasingly disorderly battle which left the Hulland army on the back foot and King Bhur short three kinsmen, he fell back toward Landerfell, the Storm army let up, and returned in bloody victory to Ernsaw.

King Hulland sent a hasty dispatch to Queen Ingrid that her son's loyalist were still strong and needed to be dealt with quickly. The rogue queen dispatched an army under the command of her brother across the river to assault Ernsaw and aid the Hulland forces in response.

Before Ser Reoth even knew of Queen Ingrid's plans he was on the move again, Queen Iona and the prince in tow, riding to assault the Hulland stronghold. On the way he was reinforced by a small yet generous army by House Montrose. They set about an assault on the Hullands who had marched to meet them. King Bhur fell to Ser Reoth's sword, and Landerfell was cleansed of all with Hulland blood in a vengeful sweep of the hold on the orders of Queen Iona. The Stormcrown was retrieved. It is generally believed that around this time the Blanchards seized the moment and took up their base of power at Landerfell.

In the time Queen Ingrid received King Bhur's letter and dispatched her army, Queen Iona and her protectors were already back in Ernsaw. The army was met by the Storm host who after their recent trimuph was booming with morale. Ingrid's brother was executed and her army in part amnestied or killed depending on the course they chose. With her plans falling apart and the main bulk of her forces defeated, Queen Ingrid made to flee Kelailles in a surrender to reality, only to be seized and imprisoned.


Cultural Advancement

Upon returning to court Queen Iona assumed leadership and regency of the Stormlands with the support of Ser Reoth, they crowned Magnus' infant son, at the age of four the new King, he would become known to the histories as King Erik the Young. For their loyal service in the recents trials of the kingdom, Ser Reoth, Ser Ermot and Ser Thongar Storm, were risen to a new office, the four protectors of the King, the Chosen. The fourth place was occupied by the newly made lord and knight Lord Ser Henrik of the new House Reyne.

With the establishment of the first Chosen came the formality of the Stormlands religion and it's acceptance into Arbrecht society. The fame of the late King Magnus was praised, his youthful vigour he inspired and the love he bore his people. Queen Iona made him the first of worship having established the beliefs of the Stormlands as a religious way; only later did Sigmund, Torygg and Thrond be assumed as the more dominant role models.

The Regency of the young Queen Iona, and the later rule of her even younger son King Erik, ushered in the first longing glimpse of a peaceful society in the Stormlands, who were at this point very a militant force once more.

When his mother Queen Iona passed, King Erik was handed full authority over the Storm domain by his uncle, for now he was old enough to govern himself. The King took a tour of his lands and holdings, taking to acts of benevolence and worldly ways. He did not act his station and instead did in spirit leave the ruling to his uncle. During these years he proclaimed the four mountains of the eastern shore of Kelailles, the Pillars and named them a place of peace and religion, he stayed there a year free of any care, in a state of deep meditation. The order of the Wise was born and their founders took up residence at the Pillars a few years later, an order dedicated to the Way of the Storm.

Upon his return to court, he finally assumed the role of a leader, and the kingdom thrived, House Reyne was gifted the castle of Skyguard as a home and base for their clan. King Erik's reign came with prolonging peace and a lack of bloodshed, so began a period of a hundred years that made true the house words, "calm before the storm."


The First Kelailles-Fyrsbruck War

One hundred and one years after the founding of the Pillars came another period of war, this time between two houses. The Storms and the Harcourts of Fyrsbruck. The Harcourts had become a powerful force in the north, and they thought to challenge the Storms to assert their own dominance. They had the King of the Storm, Magnus III assassinated and declared open war on the east, casting off their longboats in a move for the isle of Kelailles.

In Kelailles, the new King Eorlund took up arms, amassing forces in Ernsaw and Kelailles to meet their new aggressors. This war saw the debut of the Hollens, and their leader, a man of immense size and strength, known as Beorn, led the Storm advance down the Arbrecht coastal sea to meet the Harcourt fleet. The two huge forces met and clashed in the Arbrecht Rush, at the Standoff the Rush.

The two forces pitched in on their respective coastlines and battled for months without either remaining the victor. The war ended a bloody stalemate, and nothing was achieved as either side pulled back as simply as they had advanced. Tensions were ever present between Fyrsbruck and Kelailles from the point onward.

House Hollen received their banners after their showing in the Battle of the Rush.


Decline of the Stormlands

After thirty years of tension, the Stormland's rivalry with the Harcourts came to a head once again, as the Fyrsbruck forces made another advance this time on Kelailles and Ernsaw, land and sea. While the other lords of Arbrecht sat back and watched the two forces expended huge levels of supplies in an all out conflict. While the Harcourts were held up once again in the Arbrecht Rush, they broke through to Ernsaw. In a twist of fate, the better navy was being bested in the waters, and the better army was being bested in the field.

A large battle erupted in Ernsaw between the two ground forces, during this time of battle, the other lords of Arbrecht were only becoming much stronger as the two rival forces bloodied their swords. King Eorlund was compelled to lead the army himself, to support his general Lord Beorn Hollen, together they defeated the Harcourt army below the walls of Ernsaw and chased them off.

Each and every lord began vying for control of Arbrecht, making their bids for power, contenders rose everywhere. With their high level of casualties in the past fourty years, King Eorland, pulled his forces out of Ernsaw and to his island holdings, to consolidate his strength and lessen the chance of further engagement with rival warlords. The Stormlands dissolved their borders, leaving control of Ernsaw to its remaining people, so saw the formal entrance of House Alinar.

With their territory at an all-time low, King Eorlund appointed a new lord to his command, Kevan Cain, a veteran of the wars with Fyrsbruck, who's house was entrusted with the protectorship of Kelailles, so rose the knightly house of Cain. To further strengthen their island, the Storms opted to raise two more castles to serve as a base of operations for their banners.


The War on the Coast

When King Eorlund passed and his son Jorundr took the throne, the Harcourts opted to strike again at the now weaker position of the Storms. They made their advance up the Rush once again, meeting the Kelaillan fleet on a familiar strength of water. The two forces locked horns on land and sea, in another bloody conflict. The two forces warred for two years before the Harcourt's advancedskill at sea finally paid off, when they finally effectively defeated the main Kelaillan fleet.

On land the Hollen and Storm forces were cut off in a prolonging engagement with the Fyrsbruck ground forces, in what was a uphill battle with the defeat of the fleet. Luckily, Ernsaw was to be counted on for supplementary provisions as the months went back without a clear victor.

The Harcourts pushed the bulk of their forces at Kelailles, most certainly intending to conquer the island, their were met by the remaining strength of the Storm's fleet in a last ditch battle at Oldshore. Oldshore was a small island off the southern coast of Kelailles, it had the potential to be used as a supply depot to fuel the Harcourt assault on the main island. Lord Ser Kevan Cain held the defence there with a sizable force.

The Harcourts hammered at Oldshore during a heavy seasonal storm, with landed troops and their supporting ships for half a year without result. The last ditch defence was paying off but the cost was becoming too much, Kevan Cain was losing his grip under the overwhelming numbers of the Fyrsbruck forces, yet he refused to withdraw and admit defeat in his position. On the eve of the new year, Lord Cain ordered a sudden all out assault on the frustrated, war battered and weather harrassed Harcourts, which broke them. Though Lord Cain would take wounds in the process that would soon cost him his life, he had ended the war, and provided some salvation for the main Storm ground forces under Lord Beorn Hollen across the waters.

King Jorundr and King Harcourt met in the Rush to talk of the future, they both agreed to pen a peace treaty that would conclude the wars between the two most major coastal leaders forever. The two most powerful houses had become the two weakest as a result of the third war, and they each set to repairing the damage. Lord Ser Kevan Cain for his sacrifice had his house granted lord protectorship, the Cain's would be the defenders of the isles until the end of time; a title they still enjoy.

The unlikely Storm victory and the fame it won them for their valor, led to a spontaneous growth in immigration from the Arbrecht mainland, forcing King Jorundr to order the assignment of new villages and other dwellings across the hold. Slowly but surely Kelailles was going to get back on its feet.


The Four Lords War

The year 300 saw a small war, the first Kelailles had seen since their ending of hostilities with the Harcourts. The line of succession in the Hollen house was challenged by four brothers who went to war with one another, each raising their own loyalists and departing the Hornburg in a bloody free-for-all, last man standing would be the new Lord Hollen.

The ruling King, Reoth delegated the task of suppression of this civil war to House Cain and it's lord Ser Abbard. Ser Abbard set forth with only his own army, urging that he did not require any of the royal army to deal with the problem. He set two openly attacking the four Hollen sons, who could not cooperate as one as much as they tried to, they were rounded up a series of disorderly battles on their part and captured by the disciplined knights under Lord and Ser Abbard.

He brought the four young men before King Reoth, who ordered them stripped of their Hollen names, declared bastards and exiled from Kelailles. Gregor Hollen, the previous lord's brother was appointed new lord of the house, and the matter was solved without instance. Lord Abbard received the favour of the crown, worth the weight of his accomplishment and small level of casualties.


War for Arbrecht

In the decades leading up to what was to be the first landing of the eastern Linchao Republic, the various powers of Arbrecht began to swell into contention for power, and dominance. Most notable were the Storms of Kelailles, the Harcourts of Fyrsbruck, the Blanchards of Landerfell, the Emmerichs of Heldenbrecht, the Lamberts of Rissenfel, and the Alinars of Ernsaw. All led their respective clansmen and peoples to war for the high kingship of Arbrecht.

Kelailles adopted a defensive posture for the majority of the war, quite frankly not having the manpower it had of old to engage so many rivals at once. House Blanchard quickly stepped to, subduing and overthrowing the ruling family of Heldenbrecht, absorbing their strength into the armies of Landerfell. Other noticeable advancements were the Harcourts outshining everything the western island city of Rissenfel could throw at their shores, and it would only be a matter of time before the Lambert designs for power were effectively neutralised by Fyrsbruck.

All the while the Storms sat on the sidelines just keeping informed of the developments; tensions began stirring once more between Fyrsbruck and Kelailles. The two houses reignited their old rivalry, and met once again on the eastern coast, two hundred years after their last encounter. King Rodrik led the Hollen lords, and his knights on land, while he had his waters safe guarded by the Cains. The Harcourt fleet, ever weary of the treacherous weather of the Stormlands did not encroach upon the island and only fought skirmishes at sea, while they fought on the ground.

King Rodrik did not press any advantage, he only kept the Harcourt forces deadlocked, unable to advance north, both side's casualties were kept to a low as a result of his blockade, while the rest of Arbrecht warred on to a point in which the Storms and the Harcourts would be fools to join in and disrupt the established fighting. The sixteenth year of the war saw it come to a close, with House Blanchard as the undisputed victor of the conflict. No house had the strength to combat what they had managed to build during the struggle. The Storms and Harcourts pulled back to their respective lands mutually.

The power and allegiance won on the mainland was not enough for the Blanchards however, even after neutralising all their immediate rivals. The Storms and the Harcourts were the next targets, the two least bloodied of all the houses in Arbrecht. They threatened to bring all their power, still strong after decades of war to the isles and declare open war on the Storms. Knowing the noble and tribal backing the Blanchards had acquired, plus the constant threat of the Harcourts seizing an opportunity, King Rodrik dealt a peace arrangement, that secured his lands and crown; deciding to unbloody his lands and bring further risk to his land and people, by swearing support to the Blanchard leadership, and it only took the Harcourts a few months to follow suit.


Coalition Against the Linchao Republic

With the growing power of the Linchao Republic in the kingdoms, and the fall of Lacharn and the impending fall of the Vandermark. With the call for aid and unity by Jondé Fontenot, the Kings and Warlords of Arbrecht joined together under the leadership of Gerald the Brave. The Lords and Kings of all kingdoms converged and met to formally join in a war coalition to remove the foreign Linchao.

The coalition first made a move on the Vandermark, King Arngeir of the Stormlands participated alongside his famed son, Ser Prince Aenar, and the allies successfully removed the Linchao presence from the Vandermark kingdom.

The Storm forces did not join the campaign to free Ahestere, nor Caelain; but joined the push against Lacharn, which was initially met with defeat. Prince Aenar led the Storm army in the battle for Lacharn, assisting the allies in banishing the Linchao from the five kingdoms.


Dissolution of the Storm Kings

With the defeat of the Linchao, the leader of the coalition Jondé Fontenot was elected High King, and the five kingdoms united under the newly established Fontenot royal line. The five kingdoms dissolved their borders and merged into a single kingdom, of Forsilvra.

In a gesture of support for the new establishment, King Arngeir relinguished his title and dissolved his own kingdom formally, joining the rule of the Fontenots, as did the other kings in Arbrecht. The line of Kings in Kelailles met its end, and the lordly line began. Though the hold did not abandon the tradition of revering their lord as a king.


The Ernsaw Plague and the War in the North

House Storm was hit as hard by the plague as most other noble houses of the kingdoms, it led to a vunrable line of succession, having claimed the life of the ruling Stormlord Ser Mathos at the young age of fifty. Lord Mathos made some big changes to the position of the Stormlands in standing with the rest of the realm, upon the outbreak of the plague he isolated the island of Kelailles, blocking access to and from the outside world. At first his action proved effective, and held the advance of the plague for four years before it breached the shores.

Of the main Storm household, the plague first took down the elderly mother to the reigning Stormlord. Then the lord's own wife and brother Hayle. The current generation of Storms were young and these losses hurt, fear of clan extinction was ever present. Mathos himself contracted the plague shortly after his wife's death, but held up resistance against it for many years. During the time of the plague, Mathos received Fitzwulf Lord William, who requested support in the Fitzwulf revolutionary campaign on the Arbrecht mainland. For the preservation of his House's power and unwillingness to go to war with the rash House of Westerland, Mathos allied with the Fitzwulf family.

To cement his word, and prove his honest intentions, Mathos commanded his brother Ser Ragnar, with the support of Lord Edmund Hollen, Ser Renauld Cain and Lord Alaric Ossent, to lead an army of five-hundred able-bodied Stormlanders in support of the lords of Westerland. During this time also came the Slaughter of Rissenfel, in western Arbrecht, where the Morgan-captained vessel the Ocean's Hangman won it's infamy. Belrand Storm lost his life in the attack, having been there to celebrate his union in marriage with the ruling House Lambert.

The hard-fought campaign ended in success and House Fitzwulf cemented its leadership over the north, House Storm proclaimed themselves sworn Banner Lords to the new lords of Arbrecht. But Lord Mathos would never see the outcome and success of his decision, having had to take his own life in a fit of plague-filled agony soon after his brother departed. His eldest son Garland succeeded him. Garland was the most capable of the three sons of Mathos, the best fighter and the best leader, and he was held in high opinion of the general populace from his prowess in tournaments. The plague unfortunately took the new Stormlord the day after his formal crowning, much to the dismay of the clan.

It was at this time that Ser Ragnar returned, his army still in tow, he reorganised the house and organised a grand coronation that would take place on the new year, and day of the new decade. A grand memorial service was held on the first day of 240, seeing off those who had fallen to the plague, noble and commoner alike, at the same event, the Head of the Wise Master Kalervo, Ser Ragnar, and Lord Rickard Reyne would personally oversee and formally crown Mathos' youngest son Eldric.

This period of disaster and war had not been entirely destructive however, with it came the beginning of promising careers of a generation of knights, the rise of a new banner in Kelailles, and it demonstrated that the Storms had not lost their militant touch over the past two centuries of peace.

Prominent Figures in History

Kings of the Storm

Sigmund the Stormlord (??-??) was the founding King of House Storm and their most revered ancestor, he is regarded as a demi-god in folklore. Historically, led the conquest of the native Tivark kingdom of Arbrecht, established the Storm kingdom, and raised the stronghold of Strun Bah Qo. According to legend he could manipulate the weather to his will, hence his chosen house name.

Torygg I Stormcaller (??-??) was the second historically recorded King of the Storm. He was the only Storm King to ever unite Arbrecht in it's entirety. He was said to wield a sword sheathed in raw lightning, and had a horn with which he could summon sudden storms.

Thrond Thunderfist (??-639) was the warrior-king who led an invasion on the Vandermark in the mid 600s. He famously fought for three weeks personally, in a hotly contested duel with the King of the Vandermark where he fell. He is depicted as a hot-tempered beserker in modern folklore, with an iconic thundertruck gauntlet.

Magnus I (642-621) was the young king who overthrew his misguided father King Hadvar. He took up the crown at a time where the Storms had fell upon hard times, and lost their hold on Arbrecht. He led a campaign to reclaim the lost lands, and was met with booming success, winning over the Montroses of Maldenham and advancing the Storm forces as far as Landerfell, where he was deceived and butchered by his lady mother, the widow of the late King Hadvar.

Erik the Young (624-542) was the child successor to Magnus I. His reign saw the necessary peace that allowed for the culture of the Stormlands to boom; from the creation of the Way of the Storm, and the order of Chosen, to the founding of the holy site of the Pillars. He also oversaw the raising of House Reyne and their castle of Skyguard.

Arngeir (56BF-11AF) was the last reigning Storm King in history. His reign saw the fall of the Linchao to the allied forces of Forsilvra in the Vandermark and Lacharn. He formally surrendered his kingship when the kingdoms united under Fontenot royalty. He assumed the title of Stormlord, and established the Kelaillan council.


Queens

Ingrid (??-619) was the wife of King Hadvar, who was overthrown by their son Magnus. She usurped power of the Stormlands in 621, colluding with House Hulland of Landerfell to murder her son and avenge her husband's humiliation. She begun the War of the Two Queens, rivalling her daughter-in-law Iona. She met her end when the Hullands were put to the sword by Queen Iona and Ser Reoth, and her followers betrayed her.

Iona (641-609) was the wife of King Magnus I, and de facto ruler of Kelailles in the place of his infant heir Erik. She was the victor in the War of the Two Queens defeating her mother-in-law and avenging her husband's murder. She formally established House Reyne, and saw to the cultural growth of Kelailles, in establishing the religion of the Stormlands and creating the office of the Chosen. In folklore she is depicted as a warrior queen, and an inspiring role model for young ladies in Kelailles.


Lords of the Storm

Prince Ser Aenar (17BF-45AF) was the first son and crown prince of Arngeir, last King of Kelailles. He was known for his dashing good looks, general galantry and chivalry - the ideal knight. He led the Storm contingent of the coalition to victory against the Linchao armies in Lacharn. He was a highly successful tourney goer, and is considered by many to be the greatest knight the Stormlands have seen, since the years of Ser Reoth.

Ser Mathos (192-239) was the reigning Stormlord during the years of the plague, and the father of now ruling lord Eldric. His actions saw to a four year delay of the plague in Kelailles, and he formally allied with the Fitzwulfs when they declared war on the Blanchard Lords of Arbrecht. He took his own life in the midst of his suffering at the hands of the plague in 239, leaving behind three sons.


The Chosen

Ser Reoth (664-596) is regarded as the finest knight in Stormlands history, he was the first named Chosen, and the first wielder of the sword Thunder. He aided his nephew King Magnus I in his campaign of Arbrecht and led his armies upon his death. His tactics and depoyment won the War of the Two Queens, he personally slew Lord Bhur Hulland and put the clan to the sword. He reinstalled the rightful heir to leadership of the Stormlands, where he served as Lord Protector of the King as the head of the Chosen.


Banners

Lord Ser Henrik Reyne (642-578) was a lowly castle guard of Strun Bah Qo before he rescued Queen Iona and Prince Erik. He would go onto campaign with Ser Reoth and bring the Hullands to justice. For his services he was knighted and named the fourth of the original Chosen, and wielder of Rain. He was also given his own banner, the first to Kelailles under the Storms. King Erik gifted the castle of Skyguard to his clan upon it's completion.

Lord Beorn Hollen (535-466) was the founding lord of House Hollen and an influential figurehead in the first two wars against the Harcourts of Fyrsbruck. He led the vanguard in both the Battle of the Rush and the Battle of Ernsaw.

Lord Ser Kevan Cain (507-448) was the first lord of House Cain, a knightly house entrusted with the defence and protection Storm domain in Kelailles and it's people. He fought in all three wars against the Harcourts and led the defence of Oldshore in the climactic battle of the third war, in what was to be his final battle. He exacted a valiant toll on the shores of Kelailles, and bloodied the Fyrsbruck forces enough to conclude the war, but died all the same from his wounds.

Lord Ser Abbard Cain (377-316) was the head of House Cain during the Four Lord War. He single handedly with his own army, brought the four rival Hollen armies to heel and seized their leaders in what was to be a short but bloody civil war for House Hollen.

Key Current Figures

House Storm

Ser Ragnar (196) is one of the two current Chosen, and the wielder of the sacred sword Lightning, and the Lord Marshal of the Kelaillan army. He was knighted at the age of eighteen after winning four straight sets unscathed, in a tournament in honour of his lord father Albern's birthday, and maintains an impressive career, although his regular participation in such events has dwindled over the years. He is regarded as the best knight in the Stormlands at present. He who led the Storm army in a supporting alliance of the Fitzwulfs during their revolution. When his lord brother and his heir passed, he personally crowned Eldric Storm.

Ser Wilhelm (206) is the Lord Admiral of the Kelaillan war fleet, and captain of its flagship, the Maelstrom. He is a free thinking and devoted member of House Storm, who holds dear the values of family tradition and belief. A fierce warrior and general, he took command of the Kelaillan fleet during the Fitzwulf revolt, leading a successful naval assault against the hostile forces of the Harcourts at Seawatch. He has a bastard son Aegon, who he treats like a legitimate son and lieutenant.

Lord Eldric (218) is the third son of Lord Mathos, born amidst one of the most fierce storms of recent memory, hence his given name. He trained from the age of seven with his father and brothers in the ways of military arts. Eldric passed through the years of the plague untouched like his uncle Ragnar, two of the only Storms who did so. He was originally the third in the line of succession, after his elder brothers Garland and Lorgar, but with the death of Garland, and Lorgar bowing out of the succession, he became the Lord of the Storm at the age of twenty-two. Since donning the Stormcrown he has quickly became a key figure in the political spectrum of Arbrecht.


House Reyne

Lord Rickard (200) is the Lord of House Reyne and a leading Kelaillan councillor who is second only to Ragnar Storm in backing. A very close confidant and in-law of the Storms, well-praised for his loyalty and devotion. A cunning diplomat, his military career appears to have ended after he was shamed during the last war.

Miranda (201) is the wife of Ragnar Storm and sister to Rickard Reyne, and the mother of Ossian Storm. She currently heads House Storm's intelligence operations, and oversees the hold's more covert tasks; and has proven a key strategic asset to Kelailles in working alongside her husband. Her marriage holds the two most powerful houses of the isles together.


House Hollen

Lord Edmund (191) is the Lord of House Hollen, and is a cheerful yet fiery tempered war figure of the Stormlands, who embodies the warrior-spirit his house is known for. He is well-recognised throughout the province of Arbrecht for his iconic warhammer, and also for his lack of patience and hesitance in putting it to use during the recent war instigated by the Fitzwulfs.


House Cain

Lord Ser Harold (195) is the Lord of House Cain, and is a cunning and calculating commander in both field and navy, precise in everything he does. As the head of the only strictly knightly-banner house associated with Kelailles, he is charged with the defence of the island and it's people. He has established himself as a powerful no-nonsense figurehead on the hold's war council.
