Castle Name: Volonté Castle
Original Castle Name: Dresden-Zwinger Palace

House Description:
Located on what is arguably the loveliest location in Forsilvra - not just the island but the kingdom itself - the Vale deLys is renowned throughout the realm for its lush foliage leading to soft sand beaches and the luxurious aspects of a hedonistic lifestyle.*

Toussaint, once a mere vassal house, has served House Fontenot for generations, first in Caelain, then in Forsilvra when their Liege Lord was elevated to Royal status. A wealthy vassal house thanks to prior exclusive trade rights with Sarmatia, they have been accused of buying their way to Banner House status due to their liberal financial support and supply to House Fontenot years ago during the various wars in Caelain, the Lords of the Vale deLys know it is their loyal service and fidelity to the Fontenots that won their valuable demesne.*

The well-established retreat of the wealthy, deLys is lined by lavish mansions sheathed in marble overlooking the blue-green water that flows against the cliffs. Numerous carved paths and staircases bring the well-to-do down to the water’s edge, making it easily approached. Thanks in no small part to the crops and glassmaking operations, deLys is a city flowing with cash, bolstered by the influx of those looking for an escape from the humdrum of their own homes into a place of beauty, vivacity and indulgence. Every desire is obtainable in deLys from gourmet foods, fine wines and liquors, fabrics and furnishings. Social events are the lifeblood of this city, each an opportunity to see and be seen. Everyone who is anyone has a home in deLys and makes the most of what the locals call ‘the season,’ running from June to October.

Hosted by House Toussaint, the arbiters of all things extravagant, life in deLys is not inexpensive. It is often said that the true mark of wealth is determined by the ability to own a home in deLys and maintain a presence there. Certainly the Toussaints show little sign of poverty or frugality, but their coffers are kept fat, profiting from the trade of tourism itself, the fine glass and crystal produced on the island and the luxury food products available. They hold relatively exclusive trade contacts with the Sarmatians, exploiting their monopoly to the fullest extent.

All that glitters in deLys is not gold, however. There are deep shadows and dark whispers surrounding House Toussaint, rumors of secrets and machinations, and ambitions never voiced for fear of repercussion. [Credit: Mari]

[Appearance]

Voltaire possesses jovial brown eyes, which matches perfectly with the color of his hair. He is always dressed in the latest fashions, and it is a rare sight to view him in anything but the finest linens and silks. When he was younger, his brothers used to joke about his egg shaped head. As he grew older, he developed a square jaw completing a rectangular format to his face. His hair is always on the thin line of too long, but never crosses that line as he makes sure it is attended to on a daily basis. He is always cleanly shaven. As he started to enter the later stages of his adult life, he has gained on some fat, but still boasts a remotely fit body, a lingering memento to his younger days. Another note to mention, he towers over majority of men (6'3”).

-------------------------------

[Personality]

Voltaire is much like his house. On the surface, he appears to be a charming man, but everyone knows him to be a tyrannical figure. Passionate yet emotional, Voltaire is a man who lives his life dictated by the whims of his soul. He is respected by his family, but he is also not very well liked. Voltaire believes that a leader should rather be feared than loved, and he lives in such a style. At the same time, there is the occasional expression of genuine love and adoration that emerges from this man, who surprises his kin by temporary bouts of compassion, understanding, and generosity.

His mood swings might be well known by those closest to him, but the public knows Voltaire as a generous man, a man who allows them to be indulgent. He is very much a man who enjoys the spectacle, and to be caught in the public’s eye. He is always willing to go the extra step to make everything a show. With his peers, quite often Voltaire tries to tempt them into enjoying their vices on his tab, always waiting before asking for a return on the earlier ‘favor’. Like many of his family in this aspect, Voltaire is an businessman and he is an enabler.

As of late, his mood has improved and personality slightly softened by the arrival of his son. His second marriage has become less tense due to Roselina’s fulfillment of her duties of producing him a son. Still some paranoia lurks in the mind of this man, thinking that the ones closest to him are after what power and wealth he owns.

-------------------------------

[History]

Voltaire was born prematurely, a small child, presumed to be lost within time. However, he managed survive but always remained a smaller child. His younger brother Rene outpaced him in size and always was the source of bullying for Voltaire for the better part of his childhood years. No one seemed to care about the abuse the heir received at his younger brother’s hands. His father pressed him to fight back, to command, to take control of the situation. As a result, Voltaire beat Rene with an iron rod until Rene was unconscious. For the teenage years, Voltaire switched the table, bullying his brothers as a cruel elder brother.

When his father began to involve Voltaire and his siblings into the ongoing operations of their house, only then did peace emerge between the siblings. Voltaire lived his life fast paced and violently, always trying to outshine and prove he is a man. Duels were a common theme for Voltaire’s life, and a constant tension between the ruling house and their more privileged subjects, who had lost several sons due to feuds with Voltaire. This came to a halt when Auguste threatened to disown his son and exile him from Vale DeLys. Voltaire married his first wife shortly after and played the role of a caged tiger.

When his first wife became pregnant, a change washed over Voltaire. No longer was he interested in adventure, but acquired a serious focus on matters of state; trade consumed his thought process. His deposition was more merry than the usual abusiveness he displayed most of his adult life. However, the more sick his wife became during the pregnancy, the more distant Voltaire became as he involved himself more deeply in trade trips, farther and farther. When the fate of his wife and unborn child threatened to turn bleak, Voltaire returned home. Immediately upon his return, his wife perished along with the child. Voltaire was devastated.

When the plague arrived, the house lost many members, including Voltaire’s parents. A rumor spread across Vale DeLys that on his deathbed, Voltaire promised Auguste that he would elevate the status of the city and usher in a new era of prosperity, to honor all the work Auguste had done in his lifetime. Instead of mourning, Voltaire called for celebrations, citing his father would prefer a joyful remembrance over the years of peace and prosperity enjoyed by the citizens of Vale DeLys under their late lord. Voltaire wanted to distract the people from the horrors of the world and appear as a strong leader. However, Voltaire felt he was aging too fast and had no offspring. Instead, his brother’s eldest was marked as the heir apparent, and his grooming proceeded. Voltaire reluctantly accepted this as fate.

Winds always change, fate decided that Voltaire’s hope for a son wasn’t out of reach. As a part of a new trade agreement with House[Insert Match]. Voltaire married one of their women. The trade relations helped both houses immensely, but the marriage’s first year was miserable and tense. Eventually Roselina became pregnant, and the birth of the son relieved the tensions within the marriage. Roselina has emerged amongst the house as a leader and as an important part of the ongoing everyday business.

[Writing Sample]

The iron rod rested in his hand and he brought the rod against the back of the servant who had dared spill the wine upon his lap during dinner. No one was in the room with Voltaire, but he was sure to let the servants hear the scream of the young servant. The boy yelled a few times but Voltaire pulled him back up upon the scuff the neck. He turned to the boy who had tears gushing down the sides of his young face and greeted the sight with a warm smile.

“Next time, your mother would feel this rod. I can’t have you embarrassing me in front of my dinner guests, boy, do you understand?” Voltaire responded, walking a line between anger and cordiality. The boy didn’t know what to say.*

“Out with you and you be wiser, you hear!” Voltaire suddenly roared before throwing a finger towards the door. The boy hurried off and Voltaire threw a goblet towards his direction to emphasized. The boy needed to know that his place was a very precarious position, one with much benefit and danger. Only then would he do his duties properly. Though, he chuckled slightly to himself, the boy did flee in such a way that was amusing. He didn’t break, but he was surely sore. Voltaire saw a challenge presentable in that boy’s mentality, and for some reason that sounded just as fun as an adventure into his city’s streets.

Also, my previous statement stands: wives do not last long in Forsilvra.
