Nessa Montrose

-------------------------------

[OOC Information]

Your Name: Amy
RP Experience: 11-ish years
Your Character's Player Base: Kate Beckinsale

-------------------------------

[Basic Information]

Character Name: Nessa Montrose
Character Age: 24
Gender: Female
Birthday (including year): March 29th, 217
Home Castle/City: Lionskeep/ Maldenham, Arbrecht
House [Birth and Marriage if applicable]: House Montrose by birth

-------------------------------

[Appearance]

Nessa is somewhat average height, standing about 5’5”. Her brown hair falls in waves down her back, and quite often it’s either in a bun or a braid to keep it out of the way. She’s got a pleasing figure, soft curves accentuated by a small waist. Her face is pleasant, warm brown eyes and full lips that are usually curled into a smile. It has been said many times that Nessa looks almost exactly like her mother did.

Her dresses are usually simpler in design, although she tries to have her clothes made from better fabrics. Jewelry choices are also left simple, and fancier pieces are rarely worn, although she does own a few. Her favourites are pieces that were her mother’s.

-------------------------------

[Personality]

Nessa was, when she was very young, a very happy, bright, optimistic girl. She always saw the best in people, was always trying to make others feel better when she thought they were down, and she was the sort who would, say, save a frog from a tormenting puppy. Story books told the truth, the good guys always won, and the beautiful girl always got married to a wonderful prince.

Then, Nessa opened her eyes.

Now she’s still bright, and is happy most of the time...or at least content. She still considers herself an optimist, and does try to always find the silver lining in both situations and people. But she’s also very well grounded, and knows all too well that people can have an ugly side. She knows happy endings aren’t common and has come to terms with it. Despite it all, though, she has retained a good heart and a thick skin.

She can, for the most part, take care of herself. Her lessons and the library were both places of solace when she was growing up, and she spent as much time at each as she could get away with. As such, she is quite good at dancing, knows a little bit about a lot of things, and is fairly well spoken. Necessity also stepped in and had her learn a bit of self defense, so she’s not bad with a dagger, although she’d much rather avoid direct conflict, if you please. She does have a sharp tongue when provoked, and her accent - usually quite downplayed - grows stronger with both anger and alcohol, or when she’s around others with a similar accent.

-------------------------------

[History]

Nessa had the honour of being first born to the youngest child of Gregor Montrose. With her parents both happy and very much in love, her childhood was a good one. In a fairly short period of time she found herself with a few siblings, and she could not wait until they were older and would play with her. But for a young Nessa, life was very, very good.

All that changed, however, when Nessa’s mother Eona died. It was an accident, was what the kids were told. She went out of the house and just...never came back. Nessa, of all of them, took it the hardest; the other children were too young to really understand, but Nessa saw it all with the wide, impressionable eyes of a child old enough to wonder.

After that, life just wasn’t the same. Her father, who had always liked his drink, buried himself in the bottom of a bottle and stayed there. The happy, loving father she knew was gone, just as dead, it seemed, as her mother. Nessa mourned them both deeply. The accident and its aftermath drew the children closer together, and they formed a unit that only strengthened as time went on.

The very next year, Craig Montrose married again. Nessa had not yet healed from the loss of her mother, and this new woman was unpleasant and didn’t like the children much. All too soon another baby was born, and then another, but Nessa didn’t feel the attachment to them that she had with her other siblings. She didn’t immediately dislike the girls, but...she didn’t really consider them family, either.

Time marched on, as it was in the habit of doing. Nessa tried to take care of things as best she could, for although they were members of an important family, they were low enough in the hierarchy that it often seemed they were overlooked entirely. They did well enough with what they were given, though, and Nessa kept a keen eye on the others that they kept up with their lessons and, as much as possible, kept out of trouble.

Plague hit, and in its first wave claimed Gilleanne, their step mother. It wasn’t a death mourned by many; she had never been a kind woman. The second wave, however, took a soul whose death crushed the whole family: Morna. Her loss left a darkness over every one of them, leaving a hole in the tight-knit group of siblings. It had always been the four of them, banded together against the world, but now the gentlest among them had been stolen.

The plague receded, but that wasn’t the end of the losses. Craig, broken by the loss of one of Eona’s children, withdrew even further, and Arran, spurred on by both the loss of Morna and the cruel neglect of their father, escaped to live with their cousin, Ryan Fitzwulf, in Westerland. Nessa could not blame him, nor begrudge him any chance at happiness, so although it hurt to see him go, she showed nothing but support. Neil stayed close to home, although he was often busy, and so Nessa was alone with her half-sisters for much of the time. However, their number dwindled even further with the marriage of the oldest of Gilleanne’s children, Heather. Nessa grew close to the youngest of Craig’s children, Ailie, in this time; she was fond of the girl, but also quite protective, and as they’d both lost their mothers at about the same age, it was a valuable kinship.

It was a chance meeting, and a tragic event, which led Nessa to the next stage of her life. Love most unexpectedly found her, and she fell hard for Thelonius DeLauncey. Although they parted without any notion of when they would meet again, a betrothal was arranged. Again, though a tragedy, she was called to move to the Vandermark long before their agreed wedding date, and it is there she remains. Her heart aches for her home and her family, but she sees a promising future ahead, wars in Arbrecht notwithstanding.

[Writing Sample]

The candle burned low as Nessa sat curled in her favorite chair, book in her lap. She was nearly asleep, her head lying against the back of the chair as she drifted, barely able to concentrate on the words on the page anymore. It was truly too late for her to be up, but Neil had been put to bed, Morna had retired long ago, and David was probably asleep by now, as well. Her father was still nowhere to be seen, and likely wouldn’t show his face until far later.

And suddenly she was startled awake by heavy footsteps in the hallway. The door creaked open, and Nessa looked bleary-eyed at the silhouette in the door, wondering how long she’d been asleep. Her candle was out, and the room had grown cold, so it had probably been a long time. “Lady Nessa?”

“Yes, what’s wrong?” she answered, trying to sound more awake than she felt.

“Nothing, my lady. Your father just returned home and asked after you. You weren’t in your chambers, so he had us search.” Nessa furrowed her brow, wondering why on earth her father would care where she was. “Would you like a lantern, so that you may see your way to bed?”

“No, thank you.” She shook her head, as if the woman at the other end of the room could see her. Standing, she took her candle holder and crossed the room, taking the arm of the older woman who stood there, waiting with a smile. “But I should like it if you would walk with me.”

One thing: Craig also has two bastard children (Blair and Keith) that the family would know about. How does Nessa feel about them?

Aside from that, looks good to me!

Sorry! Luke and I were going on the idea that since Craig barely knew if his own children lived and breathed, he would probably not know about bastards even if they were paraded in front of him, lol.

That said, I added a bit in there, so it should be fixed! ^^
