-------------------------------

[Basic Information]

Character Name: Arius DeLauncey
Character Age: 17
Gender: Male
Birthday (including year): November 19, 224
Home Castle/City: City of Belleile on the Isle of Forsilvra
House: DeLauncey

[Personality]

Arius is a timid boy who is accustomed to being taken care of. Upon losing his vision shortly after he learned to read when he was seven, he lost his life plan of following in his father's footsteps, and has failed to substitute a new one. His mother, feeling keenly the tragedy of his situation, facilitated his learned helplessness and always made sure he was attended to. Now that she is gone, Arius feels more unbalanced than ever, and is reluctant to step out of the doors of his home without guidance. He does not know what will become of him as the years pass, and that concern is a constant worry to him.

Driving Arius's exterior anxiety and timidity is a deep anger. This anger is directed in all sorts of directions: at the gods--for it seems a cruel trick to play on a boy, placing him in an excellent position to become a scholar and then removing the one thing most important in allowing him to achieve that goal--, at his father--for after Arius lost his sight he moved on, teaching other people, training other people, as though Arius meant nothing to him--, at his mother--for she left him alone when he needed her--, at his sisters--for they are moving on in their normal lives, doing normal things, laughing and dreaming and playing and reminding him all the time that they are preparing to abandon him--, and at himself--for being a nobody, a nothing who's accomplishing nothing on this earth but sitting still and waiting to grow old and die.

There are a few things that bring Arius joy, and primary among them is music. He had shown some signs of musical talent as a small child, and since he recovered from the illness that stole his planned future away he has spent hours each day practicing. He cannot, of course, read music, but he plays well by ear, and is even known to compose new pieces, to be performed when only family members and their own servants are present. He is accomplished on harp, flute, and rebec, and used to sing before his voice changed. Since the change he has been anxious about singing, and has fallen into the habit of remaining silent.

Arius also possesses a strong curiosity, which has not been dimmed by the fact that an education would do him little good. He enjoys being read to, when people have the time and interest to read to him. He also listens carefully when wise men speak, and is often struck by questions that should be asked, but is loathe to ask them himself, lest he draw attention to himself or--worse--ask a question that would expose him as ignorant, or stupid. He could not bear to know he was ignorant and stupid along with everything else, and so, after some embarrassing occasions when, as a boy, he was corrected in his assumptions, he has resisted asking. However, what he does learn he is known to pass along to people of his station or lower, including his younger sister and other relatives--even his older sister, for she isn't that much older and wiser than he is.

His social life mainly involves his family, especially his sisters, whom he calls upon for guidance when he goes outside and whom he plays music for when he wants to hear an opinion other than his own. He also, despite feeling that he will be doomed when they leave him behind, wishes the best for both of them. He follows the stories of their adventures with great attention, and offers what reactions and advice he can, often based on what he has heard other people say.

-------------------------------

[History]

Until the age of 7, Arius was raised in a manner typical of people of his level in society: he had few chores and responsibilities and a great deal of education. He was particularly fond of the natural sciences and enjoyed poking about in the dirt when such poking was allowed. The assumption was that he would follow in his father's footsteps and become a scholar, and so he begged to be taught to read and happily began to pack knowledge into his brain. He was delighted to please his family and looking forward to making them proud as he continued to develop.

Unfortunately, during the autumn before his eighth birthday, Arius was struck with a boyhood fever that within days confined him to bed, shaking and at the brink of death. By the grace of the gods, and the good care of his parents and the children's nurse, he made it through the illness, but as his body began to recover his eyes began to fail. Each time he looked up at his parents and nurse he saw less of them. He did not realize that this was a permanent change until the day he opened his eyes and couldn't tell that he had. It took him weeks to fully accept that he would not see again, and much longer to emerge from his despair enough to make any gesture toward learning to live with his disability. Truth be told, he has not yet; he has only learned to survive with it.

Arius's parents wisely sought ways to keep his mind busy. When he was strong enough, they brought him a tutor whose main purpose was to read to him, supplied him with musical instruments and a teacher dedicated solely to music, and tried to have family members or servants take him outside daily. Arius, sunk in his gloom, listened to the tutor with varying degrees of patience and remembered little of what he heard, but after a slow beginning he did take to the music. Here too he had little interest in the formal tutelage of his teacher, and after learning the basics of the instruments he was interested in he asked his parents to cease the lessons, and proceeded on his own, where no one could hear him and tell him he was wrong. He knew very well when he was wrong, and his frustration with his own errors saw to it that he continued to practice each piece until there were no further errors.

He became very set in his ways, as time passed, for routine and order made for the most easily understood day. His mother helped him and supported him in this, smoothing the way and making sure matters were arranged according to his needs, and he continued in his life as best he could, following his routine of meals, music, guided walks, and conversation with his sisters. His mother's recent death has thrown his entire world awry, and he is clinging desperately to some vestige of his old order, of some small comforts in a life that is strange and far too threatening for a helpless boy like himself.

[Writing Sample]

Arius always arranged to be out on laundry day: the maids running about with bundles of clothing, the water that occasionally dripped on the floor, the excitement and movement as linens were stripped from beds, and the like were all too much for him, and he felt far better when he was safely installed in the park, on a bench, with his rebec on his lap and a flute in his case. Someone always packed up a little picnic lunch for him too, and he sat there playing, eating, or daydreaming as the mood struck him, until someone came to take him home.

Today, upon returning him to their front door, his sister had skipped away to other duties or pleasures, leaving Arius to find his way back to his room. After so many years, he knew this house well, and this was not a challenge. He did not even need to count the steps before he turned, or trace his hand along the wall to count doorways until his own. He entered into his own room, hand laid gently on the doorframe out of habit, to make sure he hadn't misjudged by an inch or two, and stepped forward to the little table he kept near the head of his bed to place his flute in its little stand.

It wasn't there.

His hand met empty space, and his eyebrows rose. Still, they cleaned his room the same day as they did the laundry. Perhaps it hadn't been placed exactly right when they'd finished. He cast about briefly, and made no contact with the stand, though his hand did brush and nearly knock over the candlestick that was usually placed on the dresser, more for show than for any actual use. He reached out with his other hand, the one holding the flute, and steadied it.

His breath was coming faster now, and his tongue darted out to moisten his lips. It wasn't here. They'd moved his things. With increasing alarm he reached out seeking his other precious belongings: the little bound bundle of parchments his sister had written up of some of his music, the sculpture of his mother's face his father had given him in lieu of a portrait, the short stack of handkerchiefs he used to clean and polish his instruments. He found the sculpture, eventually, centered on the table instead of over at the side, which at least let him stop worrying that he was in the wrong room, but the other things were missing as well. He could hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears--everything was wrong, it was all wrong!--and reached out for his bedframe, thanking all the gods in one breath that no one had meddled with it, at least.

When his sister came in to call him to dinner, he was curled up on top of the covers, facing the wall, his flute and rebec placed haphazardly on the table, uncleaned and un-cared for. He was lost in his own room.

Just two small things so far -- it goes Alexandrine, Augustine, and then Arius -- and as of October 30th, Alex was 18. So ages need to be changed -- you can get with @dara and decide age differences if you want, or bump Arius down to 16... works for me either way but we have to cram 3 kids into that space. Also, body text needs to be centered
