Default Niamh Vulferam

NIAMH VULFERAM

-------------------------------

[OOC Information]

Your Name: Friday
RP Experience: 8 years and counting, a lifetime of being from a different world
Your Character's Player Base: Anna Kendrick

-------------------------------

[Basic Information]

Character Name: Niamh Deryn Gormflaith Vulferam
Character Age: 19
Gender: Female
Birthday (including year): May 7th, 222
Home Castle/City: Mier
House [Birth and Marriage if applicable]: Vulferam

-------------------------------

[Appearance]

Standing at 5'8", Niamh has the typical build of a Vulferam woman; tall, willowy, a slight absence of curves. She has a vibrant smile and long, auburn hair, that is often kept in a long braid or left to hang in waves down her back. Her laughter -- nay, even her voice -- is loud -- it can often be heard ricocheting through the corridors of the main keep in Mier. She tends to wear form-fitting clothes, be it dresses or simple shifts, and a pair of weathered boots instead of slippers, the laces often untied. Niamh is a very lovely woman, but it is her kindness that shines through more than any exterior beauty -- her face is almost always curved into a smile; she is naturally happy, and the rare occasions she is upset, she folds in on herself quietly rather than display it. On her left hand on her middle finger she wears a ring with a small sparrow on it, and on the upper thigh of her left leg she has three long scratches -- a strangely similar mark to bear claws.

-------------------------------

[Personality]

Niamh Vulferam is wild.

There is no way around it -- she may as well have been born a wild animal than a woman because she is hard to control and even harder to break. Like a young colt, Niamh never goes anywhere with ease -- her preferred pace is a run, and she can often be seen rushing down the long hallways of the mountain keep in Mier. More often than not this is because she is late for something, or had forgotten a task she was assigned to complete, and even as she grew into a young woman, these traits have not changed. In many ways, it was her older sister Aibhilin who inherited all the grace and gentility of their mother, and left none for Niamh. Whereas her older sisters are the epitome of control and caution, it can rightfully be said that Niamh has none -- as she is more wont to leap without looking than take the moment the ask herself: is this a good idea?

The answer is yes. It's always been yes, regardless of the question.

But for all intents and purposes, Niamh can be a lady when required. It's not easy, of course -- getting herself to sit still and hushing her normally loud voice. Everything Niamh does is in excess, and dampening down her fire requires a great deal of water. But she respects the importance of her brother's position and how her own behavior can reflect upon her family; so more often than not, Niamh chooses to remain silent but pleasant in the company of others, if only to avoid saying something she shouldn't. With that said, it is hard not to like Niamh; she is a strong woman, a pillar in a storm, true to her convictions. And who doesn't need someone like that on their side?

-------------------------------

[History]

Born the seventh child and fourth daughter to Conri Vulferam and Sepphora Blanchard, it was not hard for Niamh to get lost in the fray. Her birth was joyous, as any additional child brought into the family was -- but from there her interaction with her parents seemed to become limited, as she was largely raised by the plethora of aunts and nursemaids in Mier. Her childhood was that of a typical Vulferam woman; she learned her appropriate lessons among her scores of cousins: embroidery, penmanship, manners, all the trappings and training of a proper noble woman. But Niamh, from birth it seemed, was never meant for stone walls; and she has a certain amount of claustrophobia in the darker parts of the castle in Mier, receiving no comfort in the thinly slated windows of the stone keep. She tried her best to be patient at her lessons and did rather well; but she preferred to be outside at all possible junctures, among the tall trees and rising mountain rocks. In this sense, it was a double-edged sword being born so far down on the inheritance totem pole. In some ways, having so many brothers and sisters born before her, and thus lending them greater responsibility, lent Niamh the freedom she so ravenously desired, which would ultimately be somewhat of a curse; slipping away was easy for her, going so unnoticed in favor of older siblings -- and yet that same knowledge of her inherent uselessness weighed on her. As she grew older, her desire to push outward intensified, and Niamh would spend long days riding through the rough mountain terrain of Meir, high up into the craggy passes where there was nothing but fog and screeching hawks to keep her company. She loved to hike the thin trails throughout the wilds and swim in the cold mountain rivers; to savor the feeling of being alone. Niamh has her secrets; she prefers to keep them.

Although there have been many remarkable events in Niamh's young life, most of them unfortunately have to do with death. Still, that seems to be the way of the Vulferam -- for as long as Niamh can remember, they were either waging war against their neighbors or hiding in the mountains from the creeping maisma of the Black Death. The plague first hit the family in 229, when Niamh was only seven years old. It took her sister Shirin quickly and painfully; all that Niamh remembers of her sister was the vigil kept by her bedside by their mother, and the wailing she heard that echoed through the night she died. Aibhilin's betrothed died as well, but Niamh knew almost nothing about the man. In 237, when Niamh was fifteen, her father also succumbed to the plague, a loss that effectively rose her eldest brother Conor to the place of bannerlord and head of House Vulferam. What Niamh feels about the loss of her father remains private to this day; it is hard to say whether she mourns his untimely passing or if it affected her at all. It was easy to be forgotten in a household of dozens -- to be an extra daughter without a purpose. Ammeline's death in childbirth in 240 was the first passing that seemed to truly affect Niamh, for she was very fond of the DeLauncey woman, whose warmth seemed to spread throughout the household.

Her relationship with her family, of course, has been as varied as her own emotions. Niamh has never found a source of comfort in her mother, Sepphora, a woman she finds manipulative and distant; and Conri was a decent father -- when he was present in her life. Niamh has always viewed Conor more as a leader of the house than a sibling or a brother, and it is his position of authority that Niamh has learned to respect, even if she somewhat resents the close relationship he seems to share with their sister Aibhilin over the rest of their siblings. Aibhilin herself is an entirely different story -- although the two couldn't be more different, Niamh does love her sister dearly, even if she still struggles with a way to relate to her.

Present day finds Niamh doing what she does best -- largely attempting to stay out of the way, and usually failing. Where once before Niamh could come and go as she pleased, the struggle in Arbrecht has changed that, and in some ways, Niamh has become a more integral part of her family, assisting in the effort that was largely constructed by her older siblings. This is Niamh's first chance to prove her worthiness to her family, and she refuses to waste it. This is her opportunity to show not only Conor and Aibhilin that she has cause to be taken seriously, not as their wild younger sister but a woman with strength -- and Niamh intends to do just that. War is on the horizon and her family has a pivotal part of it; one cannot be a Vulferam and not be fully ingratiated into the cause for the Blanchard family, her own mother's former people.

[Writing Sample]

The roads leading to the main keep in Meir were always busy these days.

Roden -- Niamh's great beast of a black Percheron -- picked his way carefully through the stream of passer-bys as the pair attempted to make their way up through the pass leading to the main castle. Niamh's fingers were twisted in his shaggy grey mane, never one to use a bridle; it always seemed too constricting and impersonal, and Niamh never tried to restrict the things she loved. The massive steed's hooves clunked intermittently against the beaten dirt road, the animal clearly cautious of the myriad of people all around him, while Niamh's own concentration was taken up by the scores of men mustering in the square. Everywhere she looked, what scant sunlight they got through the clouded sky above the city was glaring off of freshly shined swords and metal helmets, oiled leather and creaking gauntlets as far as the eye could see. It was fascinating.

Somewhere in the distance, she heard her name called, and Niamh managed to tear her green eyes away from the sight, a tentative smile on her face.
