"Lyanna was a sweet girl when she visited us in Kyla. From what I saw, she hasn't changed, except the sadness she had at the loss of Benjamin. Of course, I understand. I miss my brother too. He was..." It was hard to talk about her brother and she wondered why she brought him up. But she couldn't help but think of Benji anytime she thought of Lyanna. They way they looked at each other made her heart soar with pride for her brother. To think that he was gone left her feeling broken. He would have made a far better Lord Winter than her father ever had. She hoped his son would grow into the same proud man that Benji had been. "Amazing. We were quite close, as we grew up in Kyla together."
She laughed at Andrew's words, although the sentiment was somewhat forced. "I am glowing with pregnancy, but that is about all. Still, I appreciate the complement." At least someone gave her a few. Her husband on the other hand was still filled with self righteous comments. She could barely waddle around their room and he was pushing her to dance? And with the King rather than himself? Oh yes, you keep appearance up so nicely. "I'm certain the King would enjoy the spin if my ankles weren't the size of cantaloupes, my lord. But please don't let my handicap keep you from enjoying a few spins yourself." |

Aurora found comfort in dancing with Rex, despite the drama at dinner. She laughed as he tried to find words to describe it that weren't negative, and she nodded in agreement, her hair sweeping gently over her shoulder. "Yes, it was very tasty, actually. The Frostes may not be conventional, but they do know how to put on a good meal."
Her face lit up at the idea of going riding the next day. "Oh, a ride would be lovely tomorrow. It will be good to get out away from everyone a little, after all this travel." Her mind drifted to the temptations that lay in wait when she was alone with Rex, and a small flush fell over her cheeks even as she tried to keep her thoughts chaste. Oh, but Alrik would kill her if he knew how she thought of her betrothed sometimes...and Auron would kill Rex. Not that he didn't already want to. She glanced around the dance floor for a moment, her eyes falling on the Urson and Lord Froste speaking. "I wonder what happened to Lord Froste, that he looks so awful..." Perhaps she would quiz the Urson later...sure, the two weren't exactly friends, but since he worked for her family, she knew him well enough to ask. |

"The sweetest," he said with pride. He always loved bragging about his sisters for they were really his source of pride and would be until he had children of his own to dote upon. "True that she took his death hard. Lord Benjamin was a good man. They didn't come much better than him." He at least believed those words. The same he could not say about Edward... He really wished that the union had never taken place, but he also understood why it had. Still... sometimes he thought it was silly to put politics and familial security over one's future happiness. Perhaps that's why he was not married himself. "I understand," he said with a nod. "I am rather close with my siblings as well." Though that was not always true...
He looked at her pensively before saying, "A compliment spoken in truth. You are every bit as beautiful as you have always been, Lady Althalos. Your pregnancy only accentuates that fact." She probably didn't think so, but she really looked very beautiful and he had a feeling that to look wretched, she'd really have to try. "I'm sure Lord Althalos agrees." |

Odelia had been remaining quiet during the meal, picking at her food and eating only what she liked. Her parents were busy with conversing with Lord and Lady Althalos so they weren’t paying a great deal of attention to her. That was just fine with Odelia as she really didn’t like people to watch her eat, especially people that would press her into eating what she didn’t want to eat.
As she had picked over her meal, Odelia had listened as Lord and Lady Althalos had spoken to one another. There was a tension between the two of them that she sensed, but she wasn’t at all certain why it was there. For all she knew it had always been there, she didn’t really know either of them very well. She turned her attention over to the dance that Callidora was referring to for a moment before shrugging and returning her attention back to her plate. She was bored with no one to talk to, but that was ok. The conversation going on around her was kind of even more boring. Who cared about any of that? Dances, snow, traveling, carriages .... certainly not her. Odelia shoved a bit of meat to the other side of her plate before deciding that she really wasn’t all that hungry any more. |

"Hence I said, if you were feeling up to it." He nearly rolled his eyes, wondering what it was that she took everything and tried to turn it into some kind of competition or oneupmanship. At least his tone was neutral, if not amused. "I care more about your comfort than the king's pleasure, dear." Again, true enough. Now try and see how she'd turn that one into something of a competition. Maybe accuse him of treason. Nothing he said was right, anyway. If Leonard hadn't known her for the rest of her pregnancies, he might avoid pregnant women for the rest of his life after this. "Other than yourself, I don't see any partners I care to spin about. So there we are." Dancing could be useful, but was often frivolous, and Leonard far preferred the gaiety of the gypsy's party than the strict formality of court and all its functions.
He nodded as Andrew Darsling spoke. Had he been overhearing a conversation instead of being privy to it, he might have had designs on the man's life-- at least in his head. Jealousy was second nature. But surely no man was stupid enough to pay too meaningful a compliment right where his ears could hear. Though he rather wished Darsling would mind his tongue. Though, if Callidora wanted to get her pleasures elsewhere, he couldn't object too loudly. She could do what she wanted in private now; they were divorced in all but name. And her stupid, unnecessary sniping throughout dinner almost made him want to make it official. "Absolutely. It's hard in some ways, one almost feels guilty appreciating the changes because one is so unable to provide aid or comfort. At the same time... it's impossible to deny her beauty." Or be lured by it... He wished he could find her unattractive. Might make life easier. It might make it easier to take a mistress; because now he rather figured he'd remain celibate for the rest of his life. |

The compliment on her brother was appreciated, and Callidora wished Benji was still alive. He'd been the best of the Winters, although, she realized Edward could be as good a lord as Benjamin would have been. "I do hope they visit soon. I haven't spent much time with Edward, my fault of course, and I plan to extend them an invitation so that we can continue to know each other better. Your sister might appreciate getting out of Psyna as well. I'm sure it's filled with many memories for her."
She blushed at the complements again, and turned to her husband. "I'm certain he does." But did he? She didn't know for sure; just because he agreed didn't mean that his words weren't his way of continuing to be proper. "And perhaps it would be best if we left the dancing to those less pregnant then. I'm quite happy enjoying the conversation with everyone around us." Still, her eyes flicked down the table to where Tempest Castell was seated. From what Callidora could see, she'd been quiet and withdrawn during dinner, and Callidora was glad that they weren't seated anywhere near her. |

"You are right on that." If she was happy here, he was fine with it. But why all the unnecessary sniping, then? He never went out of his way to hurt her, why did she do it to him? She might enjoy the conversation, constantly driving her words the way a carpenter did with nails, but he just longed to escape.
