Secret Princess

Deirdre nibbled at the last of a dried apricot as she observed the dancing pairs. The young men were all so handsome, and the ladies so fair, but she was admittedly entirely unused to being such an inactive part of any festivity. Of course, this was inevitable in such a mixed group. Goodness, even Aiden was participating! She felt a surge of pride for her shyer brother (could that girl be his mystery lady love?), but though Deirdre wasn't the sort who allowed herself to feel left out very easily, at the same time she was beginning to get restless. Her brother probably didn't appreciate her nosily peering over at him and his dance partner, anyway.
"I am greatly enjoying watching our dear companions dance, but us ladies appear to be at a disadvantage in our numbers," she remarked to the scattered group who also remained seated. "Do you suppose it'd show a lack of propriety on our parts if we cleared off a section of the table for a game of cards?" She laughed merrily, though the remark was only half in jest. "Oh! A better idea - does anyone else here play an instrument? Perhaps we could join the accompaniment," she mused. "It'd be a polite alternative to simply waiting patiently, I'd think." "Sometimes the simplest things are the most beautiful."
Melari smiled at Aiden as she danced, adding a delicate flourish to the current step before returning back to his arms. This was one of the prettiest melodies she knew, and while the dance was easy it was also very enjoyable. Aiden led well, and moved with a lithe grace that was a bit surprising considering his shyness. He was certainly one of the better dance partners she'd had, and things were all the better because they were friends. She trusted him. "I love the song they set it to. It doesn't matter that the steps are easy -- doesn't it make you think of beautiful places?" |

The little flourish made his eyes light up because, unlike Aurora, she didn't seem uncomfortable to make the dance theirs rather than a ritual. Aiden grinned at her, not even in the slightest uneasy anymore and began to add in his own intricate additions to the standard dance. He didn't even care that it might have looked like he was trying to upstage the King, he was here with Melari and was going to enjoy dancing with her. She returned to his arms and he grinned, for once enjoying the moment rather than overthinking it.
"It makes me think of Caelain. Of her rolling countryside and the peaceful forests." He admitted. It was clear that his homeland held his heart firmly - and so it should for the heir to the country. He'd never visited anywhere else, but he found he had no great urge to. Maybe that would change...maybe that would be part of his learning as heir. Getting a little head of himself, Aiden brought himself back to now, twirling Melari with a perfect grace that only came from a long time of well practiced attempts. "Where does it make you think of?"

"Really? I was hoping to learn some of the ones that you might know." Aesha smiled, gently amused by the King's statement. "My mother has been teaching me some of the courtly dances not native to Ahestere. I was looking forwards to practising them with you." Of course, at the same time she had been horribly, ridiculously worried, but the fact that Adrien seemed to be so kind helped, indefinitely.
Holding his hands with her own, Aesha smiled, flattered by his comment about her being the fairest lady in the south. If the King truly wished to be taught something of her people's dances, than who was she to deny him at all? "I would be just as happy to teach, however." She told him. If he wanted to change the pacing of the music, then he could. |

"It makes me think of Caelain, too." Mel smiled at him, grateful that she was with a talented dancer. "I think we might have the loveliest province in the nation -- all the rivers and forests and ancient hills, and don't forget the Sea. And of course Demere; White Spires is the prettiest home anyone could want. But I think this song is a little more mysterious than that, so I think of the wild places under moonlight. It's not a very daylight sort of music. It's quiet and deep." They turned, her palm pressed firmly to his, and Melari kept her eyes on his face. "I'm glad you love Caelain so much. After all, it's yours."

She moved with a grace that made her almost hypnotic to watch, though Aiden was far too skilled to let it distract him. No matter how much he would have enjoyed watching her dance. "You may be right. Though...I don't really know anywhere mysterious." It was a strange admission, but one that was true enough. After all, he hadn't exactly been anywhere besides Caelain. He masked the follow up sentence, or lack thereof, by spinning with Melari before smiling. "It isn't mine yet. My father still has more than enough years in him. And I'm sure there is something about our land that is mysterious. Don't you think?"

Adrien grinned, “Of course I can teach you as well. We can do both!” He moved her the steps that were typical for the music that was being played, keeping the steps simple for now. “How much have you practiced? Can we add the half-steps and the twirl to this one?” He didn’t want to overwhelm her.
“What do you think of my court and my castle, Lady Aesha? How does it compare to Ahestere? I want to see your home so very much. I have heard it is always warm, and the sun is strong and the land is made of sand! Is that true? And Julius tells me you all wear lightly silks, but here I see you in a dress of our style? Did you have that made especially for me?” |

"Oh, there are plenty of mysterious places in Caelain." Melari smiled at him, completely enjoying the dance. "You just have to wait until moonlight, and then find somewhere very quiet. I'm telling you there's magic. Our land is very old and there's something ancient in the earth that comes out once the sun is down and silence falls."
She spun with him, then returned the smile by looking up into his eyes. "Your father is a good lord, and someday you will be too. I can tell." |
