Aesha held no qualms about sitting with the King through the next joust. If anything, it was a good opportunity for them to speak, and from what she had seen of his thus far, he at least seemed to be very nice. Aesha moved from her seat to the space beside Adrien, and sat with him, watching the next joust. Lord DeLauncey certainly appeared to be very good, and she cheered along with her companion, clapping her hands and laughing ever so slightly.

"Oh, that was exciting!" She smiled brightly, folding her hands lightly on her lap now that they were not otherwise engaged. "What must it feel like, to be on one of the horses, to have someone else charging right at you!" Terrifying would have been her first guess, although judging by the fact that so many seemed to be taking part, there had to be something more enjoyable to the process in its entirety, as well.

So, Lord Renate was asking Cornelia for his favour? Such was an interesting thing, but beyond the political implications, what did it matter? Aurelia left following the exchange, and heavens knew what the other girls might have been thinking. Dahlia loved all of her sisters- they were darling, and beyond that, they were hers. She tried to look out for them all as best she possibly could.

Checking to make doubly sure that Aurelia was out of the picture, Dahlia moved beside her younger sister, reaching out to give her hand a gentle squeeze.

"It's alright." She drew enough in the way of sense from herself, to say. Sure, she was dying of curiosity, and wanted to know the story, every smidgen of it, in full, with incredible detail, but now was perhaps not the most appropriate of times. They were supposed to be watching the jousting after all, not gossiping, sorely, sorely tempting as that might have been.

Cornelia granting him her favor made his day, and for that Renate smiled widely. As delicately as he could, he took the ribbon from her, acutely aware of how their fingers touched. Deftly, he tied the ribbon around his upper arm. “Thank you, my lady, I hope to not do you a disservice,” he said quietly, before trotting off.

Making his way over to the lists, Renate was confident that he would win. Renate was up against Edgar Adams from House Hallvador. Having been close with Alvric, Renate knew Edgar Adams, even if it was only vaguely. He was a nice man, and a strong man, but Renate did not believe that he had the same level of skill that Renate had.

Renate’s assumption was easily proved correct. It had only taken one pass, which was a surprise even for Renate. His lance had connected off-center with Edgar sharply; enough to awkwardly tumble the man off of his horse. Renate had managed to lean backwards and stay on his horse. Once it was over, Renate wasted no time in removing his helm and dismounting.

Once his armor was off, Renate made his way to the stands. He was headed straight to Cornelia de Valle. Stopping before her, Renate stood for a moment before interrupting the chatter of her sisters. “My apologies for interrupting, but I wanted to thank Lady Cornelia. I would not have won if it wasn’t for her.”

Kenneth was up next in the jousting tournament. He wasn't worried; he rarely was. In fact, Kenneth was never worried in the first round. He only felt the slightest trembles in the later rounds of jousting tournaments, as second to his sword it was his best martial skill. He made sure that his squire had strapped the breast plate carefully and and then mounted his horse.

Kenneth rode out as gallantly as he could, making a round or two around the jousting track and waving to the watcher's as a herald announced the Kings Champion. In his mind, Kenneth knew that if for whatever reason he lost today, he'd be considered a disgrace and probably never be chosen to champion the King in a tournament again.

He eyed his opponent up. The man did not look comfortable; in fact, he was sweating. He was fidgeting. He already had it in his mind that he was going to lose and he was just damning his bad luck now. Kenneth smirked; this was easy. If the man he was facing, George Courtney, could not believe in himself, how could he expect to win? Where was that confidence the Fitzwulf symbol was to inspire in their troops?

He slid his visor down, and readied himself. He eyed George's form before the match began; he was not riding normally. He was more inclined to try and keep a defensive manner than keep to the form years of training had taught him. Kenneth saw the weak point; if he aimed it just right, he could get past the shield and hit him awkward, and from there the man's weight would carry him to the ground.

The signal to begin was given and they rode towards each other. The horses got faster, the riders got closer. Kenneth readied his attack, George squinted. They clashed together, and Kenneth hit his mark with pinpoint accuracy. The man nearly did a side flip off his horse! Kenneth, meanwhile, had managed to successfully parry George's half-hearted jab.

The crowd roared, and he trotted over to his fallen opponent who was being helped up by his squire. "Good ride, Sir Courtney. Though you might want to keep to your training in the future! Do that, and you just might be able to overcome any challenge." He said, trying to offer some advice to his soured enemy.

Then he turned to the crowd, gave one last wave, bowed before his King and departed, not wanting to hold the show up.

Oh god the time was finally upon him. Balthasar, now completely forsaken to his fate, rode over to the lists. It was time, there only a few jousters left, and it was his turn. Balthasar gave a glance to the other man. Frederick Esser. He did not know him, besides that he was from Caelain. He seemed nice enough, and he was older, which Balthasar liked. It was nice to not be facing Kenneth Montrose, for example.

The first round finally started, and Balthasar took off, as did the other man. Frederick Esser’s lance connected with his breastplate, shattering. But it wasn’t enough to knock Balthasar off his horse, which was almost to his surprise. His own lance had done nothing, as he had missed the man.

The first round was over, and Balthasar sighed. He had wanted this to end, quickly. But it didn’t seem that it would… Unless he tried to end it himself. As they men readied themselves for the next pass, Balthasar looked at the man as he thought back to their first pass. He was looking for any weakness to exploit.

Then they were starting, and Balthasar charged forward on his horse, aiming his lance towards the man. The lance shattered, very quickly as it made contact, and before Balthasar could even really process it, the man’s body fell of his horse. Not so much fell off, but it seemed more to slump off. Was he all right? Balthasar had never expected to actually knock the man off his horse, and Balthasar commanded his horse to a halt.

Jumping off the stallion, Balthasar removed his helmet, moving over to the man. The man’s squire was there, as were a few others, and more heading towards. When Balthasar got close enough for contact, he almost fainted. A splinter of the lance was crammed through the man’s visor. Someone, he didn’t know who, pried at the helmet, managing to remove it. It was then that he realized that Frederick Esser was very much dead. The splinter had pierced through his eye, and Balthasar knew that it had gone deep. Deep enough to kill the man.

Balthasar didn’t know what to do, and so he just walked away in shock. The man was dead because of him, when he never should have entered the joust to begin with. He was a fool for entering, and someone had paid the price. Walking away, in no particular direction, his squire ran up to him. Oh yes, he still had his armor on, though the helmet he seemed to have dropped somewhere.

She turned to watch as her husband jousted, not because she cared but because it was proper and she would not shame her family. Her father would expect her to at least appear proper and for him, and her brother, and the rest of the Forthwind line she would. Her eyes followed him as he rode, completing each pass. If he did well, she didn’t notice or care, and then..

He was on the ground. People were yelling. She could see even at this distance, there was blood. And the way he was laying... oh god...

It happened fast. She swooned, and then she was falling, and then the world went black.

The way Aesha found jousting exciting made Adrien grin, and he suddenly wished he was down there, asking her for her favor and having her cheer for him as he pounded down the lists, visor pulled down and lance lowered. He could almost imagine it as he watched the Lord of Llywarch and a knight from Caelain take their first pass.

“I do think it would be exciting to be out there, my lady,” Adrien smiled, his eyes still watching the match. The competitors were turning to make the next pass. “I plan to joust when I’m a bit older and Sir Geoffry has knighted me.” He glanced up at his mentor and flashed him a little grin. But then the attention was on the march, his eyes riveted to the lists. The two clashed and then one tumbled from his horse and suddenly it was chaos!

“Ladies, please shield your eyes!” Adrien called out as he rose. He looked down at the man dying in front of them and realized that this was why the council hadn’t wanted him to compete.

“ALL RISE!” he called out, motioning to his Herald to repeat the same into the megaphone designed to amplify his voice. They would honor the fallen man.

Sepphora stood at the young King's request. Poor child never will understand real blood shed, this tourney was meant for entertainment. Her eyes were never focused on the match anyway. Sepphora never enjoyed such sports, instead she focused her attentions on the other noble families. Her late husband Conri never enjoyed court life or any kind of life outside of Arbrecht. It was a great blessing when the plague claimed him. Sepphora sat next to her daughter Aibhilin dressed in a light gray gown with the Vulferam yellow laced around white and red rose pattern.

She had never been known as a great beauty in her youth but Sepphora felt she looked quite good for a woman of her age. Especially after mothering thirteen children and now being a grandmother to many more. Sepphora noticed the young noble girls in the King's box. A Fitwulf was among them, it was a shame but Sepphora decided against commenting about it. Too many ears around to slip up like that. "Such a waste of life," Sepphora commented in a low voice to her daughter Aibhilin. "And they consider our people savage."

Aurora rolled her eyes at Geoffry. He was acting out of line, going after Lady Marcheline when it was none of his business. The woman was a brat, and had openly defied something that Aurora had said. She had blatantly disrespected Aurora, even if Aurora could have been more polite. At least Geoffry was old, and would probably die soon, for he was practically a bag of bones. It was a mean thought, and Aurora vanished the thought, instead focusing on Cassius’ joust.

Aurora blushed at Cassius’ words, immensely proud of him. He looked like a man out of a fairytale, tall and proud on his horse, with shining armor as he called out his win. Aurora had always found Cassius attractive, but now she even more enchanted by the man. He seemed perfect in everyway, the only exception being the simple minded Marcheline. Still, her spat with the woman could not diminish the excitement she felt towards Cassius’ win.

Kenneth was up next, and Aurora watched him very carefully. He looked the perfect knight, tall and fit, in the shining Horn armor. It was an easy victor, Aurora could tell, and she smiled and cheered for Kenneth. His win was appropriate, as he was representing Adrien. Aurora couldn’t wait to congratulate him later.

Then there was another joust, and an unexpected death. Aurora was grateful that Adrien quickly took control, and she stood as she commanded. She didn’t bother to look at the body, having no desire to see the bloodshed. At least it hadn’t been Adrien…

Jarred out of her enthusiasm with the sudden casualty, Deirdre's hands flew to her mouth with a gasp. It was a sudden shock to her system to be reminded that the sport she had been so eagerly cheering up to that point could so easily turn to chaos. She rose at the king's request, clasping her hands together to keep them from trembling. Pale, she mouthed a silent prayer to the five.

She hadn't known the fallen knight, but... What if it had been someone else? She looked down at the field warily, planning to seek out her father at the soonest opportunity.

Hector had won his match, which had been fantastic, and Vesper planned on telling him so afterwards. Beyond that, Vesper had mostly sat in silent during the joust, bored out of her mind. She didn’t care for any of the people jousting, and jousting was not something she cared very much either.

The death of Essex came as a sudden shock, lulling Vesper out of her boredom. At first she had just thought the man to be knocked off his horse, but as people rushed over and worked at the man’s helm, it was obvious. Vesper winced; she didn’t want to have to see this shit. Burying her head into Marius’ arm, she held onto him. “Do we need to stay for the rest?”

However, that question was answered for her, with the appearance of Lyneth. After a quick exchange of words, Vesper got up, leaving with her cousin. They were off to do far better things.

Watching Lord Fleurant tie her ribbon to his upper arm and then retreat to the lists, Cornelia felt like she was floating outside of herself. What had just happened? Had a banner lord -- an actual man of nobility and not someone's silly half-cousin -- ask her for her favor? ... And this man, of all men, considering such things? She was sinking back in to her own body when Dahlia spoke, and Cornelia hadn't caught her sisters words. Her face felt hot, and while Cornelia knew a red flush must have been overtaking her features, she grabbed her sister's hand nonetheless.

"Can you believe that just happened?" she whispered, a conspirator, rhetorically, but at the same time, wondering what her sister thought. Cornelia vaguely realized Aurelia had left, but before she could think about why, Cornelia watched Lord Fleurant with bated breath as he jousted. Every move seemed gallant -- even though Cornelia knew she was being overtly gushing about it. And his immediate return did nothing to abate the rapid beating of her heart.

" -- You rode bravely, Lord Fleurant. It was my honor to see you win," Cornelia said lightly, the smile returning to her face.

Nathaniel had been eager to watch his brother's joust. That eagerness, however, was tempered incredibly the events which came to unfold. It all happened so very quickly... the two men charging at each other, the one falling- slumping from his horse. The Authority of Diplomacy leaned forwards in his seat, his hands both gripping the sides. The other man... his brother's opponent, had died. Nathaniel was not exactly certain who that was, but... that was not the current thought flooding through his mind. Balthasar. How must Balthasar have been feeling? Nathaniel could not even begin to imagine, to describe.

He watched as his brother walked from the field, and stood, the sombre expression cast upon his face an incredibly unusual thing to see. He wanted to go, too- to follow his brother, concerned rather greatly for how he was.

He could excuse himself, leave the tourney for a time. For as long as was necessary, perhaps. And so, he did, the sentiment being to see if there was anything, however small, he could possibly do.

"Oh, what a shame." Elanor watched the knight's demise unafraid, but there was real trouble in her eyes when she rose at Adrien's command. She was cold, and not needlessly bothered by blood, but that didn't mean she found joy in the end of a life. If she had not had so many pairs of eyes watching her, it was likely anyone could tell that she was grieved. "I hope he wasn't married."

She ought to do something for the family. Just small, because she was a stranger, but a death was never easy.

Aesha had been enjoying her conversation with the King. Regardless of his royalty, his station, he honestly did seem like a nice young man. Knowing that she was a possibility for match, given her father's power, Aesha was glad. She had told her parents that she would try to do her best whilst she was here to impress King Adrien, but she would have been dismayed if he'd turned out to be a fiend.

She had been on the verge of replying to his comments when chaos descended on the field. There was shouting, and Aesha rose at the sound of the King's voice. They had been instructed to do so, and soon enough, the girl could see why. Someone had died out there- an unfortunate turning of events- a scene that she could not boast of ever having witnessed, before.

She felt terrible, but in a sense she felt rather intrigued. She had never looked upon death this way before, and it was interesting to dwell upon. Easier to feel that way, perhaps, since she'd never known the man who'd lost his life out on the field.

Geoffry acknowledged his pupil's grinning remarks with a smile and a nod. "Your Grace," he said. "At the rate at which you're-" Then he was suddenly cut off as a deadly silence, followed by screams, signalled the death of Sir Frederick Esser. The king was on the ball directly, making Geoffry smile just a little bit wider. His knightly values are coming along quite well... he thought approvingly. Julius and - I suspect - Lord Tysilio must be commended for his thorough education into kingly behaviour. He had seen Adrien grow over the years and was proud of him. It wouldn't be long until Geoffry would be absolutely sure that the boy would be knighted.

Immediately, Sir Geoffry rose as his King commanded, being among the first. "Alas," he remarked with a sigh as his facial expression turned grim. He knew Sir Frederick and had jousted many a turn against him. His family were vassals to the Kyffins of Weallan, just like Geoffry's had been vassals to the Faeralds. "Amelie has dealt Sir Frederick a cruel turn. May the Five have mercy on his soul," he prayed. Geoffry was a staunch Quintist and prayed regularly.

Etienne wasn't concerned, at all, about his first match. It was against some nobody from somewhere. What was more bothering him was who he was going to get a favour from. He had donned his armour early, to get a feel for the weight and the exertion of carrying it over his muscles. His helmet was tucked neatly under his arm, all of it a state of the art style and unblemished, for Etienne expected only the highest quality. He had taken to looking out over the stand for now, while another joust...well, he would say happened...in the background. Even that was a little too strong a word, with how lacking in entertainment value it had seemed to be. A spare glance towards the arena told him that actually, one of the competitors had died. Shame. Just meant he wasn't good enough.

Immediately he got back to looking. It didn't help that none of the prospects seemed either worth his attention or of good enough blood. Those that were pretty were small banner houses, or ones he had never heard of. Those that weren't really didn't catch his eye. Frankly, if he wanted someone worthy of being a Fleurant's favour, he would have to look for a Fleurant. And if he was going to do that...might as well piss off Renate when he was at it. Narcisse it was then.

Leaning over the stand, he gestured to his sister and grinned. "Tell you what, Narcisse. You give me your favour and I'll display it proudly and loudly as your brother, to draw attention to you. Then, when I drive my opponent to the floor, every eligible batchelor in the kingdom will be looking at you and knowing what a discerning eye you have. Deal?"

Narcisse was, of course, here to support her brothers. She had watched the proceedings from her seat in the stand, watching with little emotion as the various and miscellaneous men competed. When Renate was finally up, she sat more to attention and watched his every move, including those which took him to ask a blonde woman for her favor. Interesting choice... she thought, as she watched the girl blush and fawn over him. She was always somewhat intrigued as to the women Renate chose, since there was always something to value in each one, and sometimes she had to struggle to find what it was. She cheered as he bested his opponent, secretly glad that it was over quickly, before settling back down to watch the others until Etienne was up.

The fact that someone had lost his life was unfortunate, but a risk they always must have known was there; she stood as the King commanded it, but aside from that there was nothing much to be done but mourn and them move on. Still, she hoped that the man's family, however extensive it might be, would receive the proper attention that was due to them. After the horrible plague had gone through, each death from something like this seemed just that much more wasteful.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Etienne's armour shining proudly, and she couldn't keep a smile from her lips. Everything about him had to be flashy and perfect, always. But now that she'd seen him, she began to wonder who he would choose to ask a favor from. Anyone he would pick would be lucky, of course, but he had almost more of a discerning eye than Renate. She watched with interest as he looked over the crowd, only somewhat surprised when he rode over to her.

Looking down at him, she grinned at his bravado, shaking her head a little. From the pouch she held in her lap she withdrew a length of silk, dyed the beautiful blue of their house crest, embroidered with the purple fleur di lis at either end. "I'll give you my favour and my blessing, but what you do with them is up to you," she said, laughing lightly as she sat forward and tied the silk around his armoured bicep, making sure it was secure before sitting back.

Lydon hated to see the Knight go down, even though he did not know much about him. His family was a vassal of Forthwind, so he'd seen the name at various Tourneys, and one of the Forthwind girls had married him. But aside from that, he couldn't say he knew the man personally.

He stood, as the King instructed, and reached for his wife's hand. It was a horrifying sight to behold, no matter who the victim was. It was why he was never much a fan of the tourneys, even in his youth when he did occasionally participate.

Rhiannon had jumped up the second the knight went down, for the slightest of moments not knowing which had gone down, before she realized it was the knight Sir Esser and not her husband. She was relieved, and only felt a bit guilty for being happy the other knight died. This would certainly not sit well with her husband, that he had accidentally killed a man. She felt terrible for that, but at least her husband was alive...

She stayed standing, to honor the man, but part of her wanted to run after her husband and the other part wanted to slump back down in her chair in relief. But Balthasar probably wanted to be alone, as Rhiannon was certain she would if their roles had been reversed.
