Default [08.4] Houses of Caelain

House Faerald
Caerthynas, Province Ruler
"Our Words Resound"

A proud and ancient house boasting its descent from the mythical Bard-King Faeral, House Faerald ruled as Kings of Great-Caelain from their ancient seat of Caerthynas before relinguishing that crown to rule as lords under the Fontenot Kings, once their most trusted bannermen. Their centuries-old rule over the Caelish Isles started when Brennan Faerald united the Island of Caelain under his rule, becoming the first King. Under the rule of various other kings, most notably Artur Faerald the Conqueror, who first landed on the isle of Cemria in 580 BF, conquering its coastline and enclosing it in castles, the kingdom gradually expanded to cover the whole of the Caelish Isles.

As rulers of a kingdom consisting of three isles, the Faeralds are skilled at keeping their lords together. They accomplish this through a mix of strength and political skill, and they have a reputation for being especially skilled at politics. They also have a reputation for being true to their word. In addition, they are very committed to family values, and loyal to the Fontenots, with whom they have a familial bond that goes back ages, most recently to the King's mother, Corenna Faerald Fontenot.

Faeralds are fair-skinned and brown-haired, with green or brown eyes. The House words are Our Words Resound.

House Forthwind
Demere, Banner Lords
"Always True"

The city Demere is the former seat of the Royal House of Fontenot. Before they were elected Kings of Forsilvra, the Fontenots were sworn to House Faerald, considered by the latter to be their most formidable bannermen. After the Fontenots were elevated to rule Forsilvra, their lands were granted to another house. House Forthwind had never been quite as prominent, despite their long bloodlines, but they gave devoted service to their lords and their land. Their reward was very much deserved, and it continues to be deserved as they shoulder the task of serving Caelain and House Faerald. Forthwinds have a long history of courage, honesty, and generosity; these virtues are taught from parent to child so they will never be forgotten. House Motto: "Always True".

House Equitatus
Tywyn, Vassal
"Pierced but Not Dead"

The Equitatus clan rebelled against their ruling family and have therefore lost everything. At one point they were close to the Forthwind clan in friendship. Drusilla and her children are the last known descendants of that house, since there are no more male heirs to openly claim it. The family were known for being extremely skilled when it came to cavalry, the horses bred from their stables could fetch impressive prices and their cavalry was said to be unbeatable in combat. They were wrong. The crossbows and the new weaponry used by Bradyn and his forces devastated the cavalry. Imposing great loss of human and horse life that the old province has yet to recover from. "Pierced but not dead." Is the family motto. The Equitatus clan were known to care for their horses, their bravery and their loyalty. They tend to have darker shades of hair with grey or blue eyes.

House Tanear
Ronyn, Vassals
"Aim High, Shoot Straight"

House Tanear are neither a very rich nor a much renowned House, though they are very old. Recently, their only claim to fame is that Sir Geoffry of the Iron Bow was born into their House. Vassals to House Forthwind, they have prided themselves on simply serving their liege lords and have neither aspired to great power, nor wealth, nor status. The Tanear motto is "For Duty Alone".

House Alysworth
Porthaeron, Banner Lords
"Strike at the Heart"

House Alysworth was a wealthy merchant family in Ayron before House Faerald united Caelain, and became formally established as the ruling family of Porthaeron when House Faerald became Kings. Even still, they kept close to their merchant roots, and continued to accumulate wealth as the years went on. They had a reputation for being skilled, successful, but slightly without scruples. Thirty years ago, Girard Alysworth was poisoned, and Emrik Alysworth was executed for the crime. As Emrik had no sons, Lordship fell to his brother Elgar. Eight years later, it was discovered that it was his younger brother, Elgar, and he had framed Emrik for the crime. This led the young Lydon Alysworth, Elgar’s son and heir, to return from his time warding with the Fitzwulfs to rule the city and strive to give the House some sense of respectability even as it was wrecked by scandal. He has ruled for over twenty years now, and has been slowly altering perception of his House. Alsyworths are primarly red haired and blue eyed. Their motto is "Strike at the Heart."

House Kyffin
Weallan, Banner Lords
"Up from acorns, oaks"

The Kyffins were originally vassals of House Faerald; however, centuries ago they were instrumental in overtaking a very strategic Cemric settlement, Weallan, and this is the place they now call home. They are located far inland along the banks of one of Caelain's major rivers; their isolated position makes them a primary target for the attacks of unruly Cemric princedoms. The banner is fiercely loyal to House Faerald and dedicated to ending the chaos caused by Cemric raiders. They prefer compromise over war, and should diplomatic efforts fail, fight only until such a point as another opportunity for negotiations arises.

With a few exceptions, House Kyffin has traditionally only intermarried within Caelain, even marrying women from vassal families and Cemric tribes in order to foster peace. The House is, and always has been, dedicated primarily to the health and welfare of Caelain and Forsilvra (which after all boasts a family of Caelish origin), and has seldom involved itself in foreign affairs, much to the irritation of the rare more globally-minded members of the family.

The Kyffins are hardy folk; they are no strangers to suffering, be it from blight or war or plague, and complaint is frowned upon. They have little patience and respect for houses who seem faint in the face of the slightest hardship. Their nobles are hardworking and down-to-earth, and they express an uncommon concern for and even, to an extent, camaraderie with their smallfolk. Though a certain amount of scholarly education is encouraged, it is viewed as far less important than practical, hands-on skills learned by experience -- be it archery, harp-playing, or healing. Kyffins are typically short, small-boned brunettes and easy to underestimate by looks alone.

Their banner has variably depicted an oak tree or an acorn; it is traditional after times of significant loss in the family to change the banner from an oak tree to an acorn to acknowledge the hardship while simultaneously recognizing the potential that lies therein. The Kyffin motto is: "Up from acorns, oaks."

House Nock
Vassal House
"Courage and Cunning."

House Nock is a vassal family in service to House Kyffin. Their landholding is Glynmor, an area bordering the territory of several Cemric tribes. The Nocks are originally of Caelish origin, but the family has intermarried heavily - a common practice - such that Cemric blood is well present. Nevertheless, the House has largely remained true to the dominant Caelish culture. The family oversees fields upon fields of agricultural lands bearing a variety of crops and livestock. The Nocks have been strategic militarymen in years past, but the most recent head of the household, Meredith, was better suited to the political and economic spheres.

The House has, like much of Caelain, been subject to much hardship over the past several years. In May 241, Glynmor was raided and burned, and Meredith killed in the chaos. His son Griffith has taken his place.

House Hughes
Abain, Banner Lord
"Conquer or Die"

Originally loyal and dedicated vassals of House Faerald, they were given charge to hold Abain and keep the Cemric tribes at bay. The family boasts a mixed history prior to their rule of Abain, being a farming house and a military house with a mix of both within their bones. The family often worked at diplomatic solutions with the Cemric tribes, even marrying into some in order to achieve peace. House Hughes has sometimes clashed militarily with Cemric tribes, but generally has the superior ground and forces to push the tribes back – additionally with some tribes sworn through marriage and other alliances to their family.

With the passing of time the Hughes expanded the size of Abain, making it into a fairly significant city in the Caelian Isles. The city became prominent in areas of commerce, a merchant port for ships to stop in, trade goods, and be on their way. Though it was not as significant as the prosperous merchant city of Porthaeron. The Hughes made up for this by turning Abain into a banking and money-lending city, after they spread the word of having the most secure vaults in all of the land. The Bank of Abain became a success as they proved their claims to be true that no thief could break into their many vaults, and noble families and even various trade guilds flocked to do business with the Hughes family and their bank to safe keep gold, documents, and other treasures.

As bankers the Hughes are good with numbers, and maintain an immaculate reputation for safekeeping wealth. As moneylenders the family is always there to provide coin, but it comes at a price – and no one cheats the Bank of Abain. There are rumours about the family being involved in the black market, but there is never any proof of these unfounded claims.
