"What's the status?" Lucian asked, looking up from the map he was sharing with Ethan. "Are things heating up yet?"

"Yes my lord," the captain said. "Harrowmont's men have set fire to the fields around the city walls. We have not yet engaged their men in direct battle, as per your orders. We are working on cutting the supply lines as we speak. Harrowmont's men said that it would be wiser to start the fire before doing that as it would distract the Quivans."

"Fantastic. I expect another report in an hour."

He looked back at the map with Ethan and then looked out over the trees. "This really is the perfect place to wage the battle from. So long as we don't get arrogant and try to act too soon, I think everything will flow quite nicely."

Ethan smiled thinly and nodded. War was dirty business. Weakening and discouraging their enemies would go a long way to ensuring victory in the battle. The sensitivities of the lords attacked made them a prime target for skirmishes that disrupted them from the inside. Crumble the supports, and the house fell in, that was how it worked.

"I agree. It's better to smoke them out, get them panicking and disorganized, then pick them off. We have the advantage, so we must make the most of it." He looked down at the map, trying not to lean too much on the table for support. "Do we know if there are ways into the city yet, perhaps through the ways underneath? If we can start creating havoc from within as well, it might confuse them. They might think they have supporters within their midst and start attacking each other, too."

“Ways into the city are the least of my concerns right now. But if we are to find weaknesses, it will be for small groups. It is a good idea. But for now, your father’s left us with enough instructions to keep us busy. We’ve also got to keep our eyes on Praena. I’m certain they’ll attempt to send word to them. We must ensure that no messenger makes it very far. And take care to watch the towers. If we see a bird so much as hover around the city, it gets shot down.”
