Default Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (4/21, Fabian Estate, Oswin/Melari)

It had all been a bit too much for him, this family life. There had been times where he had been at home with his own, but even now they seemed a distant memory. Oswin wanted to laugh at the irony. He had always kicked a fuss up against doing what his family wanted, had always tried to carve his own path, to make his own future off his own back. He had finally had the chance to do that but...

Now? All he felt was jealous and alone. He'd had to politely ask to excuse himself from their company, not for any particular reason except that he wanted to get out of there. It was no insult to the family, just that he really needed some time alone. He had been viewing Fabian as if he were an elder brother, but the realisation hit him that he really would not fit in with a family this close. All he knew was how to be independant.

So here he stood, watching as the sky burned a fierce red and the sun stayed on the horizon, dipping behind some far off hills, shying away from the welcoming sky. This time, Oswin really did laugh, a warm, gentle ripple of a chuckle. Looked like everything was reminding him of what a coward he really was.

Melari watched the man a moment, studying his silhouette against the reddening sky. She'd followed him outside, and this evening her attention was on him instead of the sun. He'd been distant all through the afternoon, closed off in a way that didn't have to show because he smiled. Oswin had a quick smile, something Melari liked, but to the observant who understood loneliness and frustration it was easy to see that the smile rarely reached his eyes. Slipping after him had been an action of concern.

After some time Mel decided that it was now or never, and she moved to stand beside him lightly as a cat. He might not like being followed, but it was hard to be afraid of the guest Lord Forthwind had brought home with him. He smiled too much. "The sunset makes you laugh?"

She sat in the grass and tugged her skirt down to cover her ankles. "Not that I mind. It's a nice laugh...but I worry that it doesn't make sense." Melari patted the space beside her in gentle invitation. "Usually people who smile as readily as you do will look at such vastness and grow quiet, because they have open hearts that are easily stilled. I think perhaps something troubles you."

He hadn't exactly heard her coming, but with the situations he had found himself in, Oswin had developed a decent awareness of his surroundings. It paid to be on edge at all times, to constantly assume that there was someone behind you, because it kept you alive. So when she spoke and startled him from his revelry, there was no visible reaction.

"Hmm? Ah, Lady Melari. My apologies, it wasn't the sunset, it just makes me think."

He quickly seized up on his emotions, locking them all behind his painted smile and guidied his mind to where he was the calmest and friendliest man in the world. Unnervingly, Melari seemed to be seeing past that. He didn't really have a back up plan.

"If you were to ask your cousin, he wouldn't believe I could be quiet for even a moment. I'd hate to disappoint him by being too reflective and calm." He didn't really want to go into it. It was too dangerous to delve into his past. Problems would arise and he had learned better than to mention it. Instead, he'd sidestep the question. "Troubles me? No. I'm just not used to this sort of a gathering, that's all. You come from such a wonderfully close family, you know that?"

The girl smiled at Oswin's joke, letting him evade the subject without any further effort to encourage it. "Actually, we're not all that close. Not anymore."

She plucked a blade of grass and plied it in her fingers, explaining. "I barely know my cousin and his family. I love his daughter Alys and I'm fond of Lady Gemma; Lord Arthur, on the other hand, frightens me. Lord Forthwind to some extent frightens me; he's nearly a stranger. Then there are the other cousins whom I also barely know, and my own brothers and sisters, most of whom are so much older than me that we aren't close. That leaves me with my twin Serai, but we've drifted apart."

Mel tossed the grass aside. "Things were better when my parents were alive. I guess you could say we're close compared to other families, but we're nowhere near how we ought to be. I take it that your family is small?"

A very real look of surprise crossed Oswin's face as Melari spoke of her own family. They had seemed the closest family he had seen, but she felt they were distant? It felt nice speaking of his friend's family, hopefully he would befriend Melari too. He could use more friends. He smiled at her, a mix between happiness and sorrow with the weight of what he had on his mind.

"This is you not close? It reminds me of how my family was at it's closest." Oswin looked out into the distance thoughtfully, his mind whirring as he spilled details he hadn't intended to. "I had three brothers and one sister. My father was an only child, as was my mother, so it was just us. They are all gone now, for various reasons. I won't go into it. I was a twin too, he and my sister were the hardest to lose. My sister because we neglected her and may have been able to save her. My brother because it was like losing a part of myself."

Oswin sighed, unable to look into the girl's eyes. It was not something he was comfortable talking to anyone about. Melari was the first person and likely the only person he would let it slip for. He'd just gotten tired. Tired of running, tired of carrying the weight. He needed to share, to confide. If he kept it basic enough, surely nothing bad could come of that?

"We had grown distant, but the link you share never goes away. Until fate cuts that thread. Then, all you feel is empty. Don't make my mistake and let your twin stay distant, Melari, is the advice I would give you. I regret it so much."

Poor man. Poor, sad man. Melari couldn't imagine losing one sibling, let alone all of them. Nor could she imagine losing Serai, even if they had drifted away from each other. It would leave such an empty space inside! Her first instinct was to move closer to Oswin for a cuddle, but because that would be entirely improper she settled for looking up at him with soft blue eyes. "I'm sorry." It wasn't the right thing to say, and it didn't help at all, so Mel got to her feet and reached for the man's hand. She took it without hesitation, pressing it once. "You can stay here as long as you like. It won't bring them back, but I'm sure none of them would want you to stay lonely."

A tender glance. "Serai's hurt me very badly, and I'm not sure if I ought to forget about it, because she's not sorry and it really was terrible...but even so I'd never want her to be lonely. Surely your brothers and sisters aren't that much different."

Oswin locked her gaze back, an eerily cheerful smile rising to his lips, despite the bleakness of the topic they were discussing. It did, indeed, radiate genuine cheer, though in his mind Oswin felt anything but. It just seemed to be a nervous habit of his, that whatever he wanted could be hid behind that way, glowing smile, beneath the sadness that inhabited his eyes, duelling with his features.

"Don't be. The only people who need to be sorry are those responsible for their deaths."

He simply nodded at her guess as to how they would feel about him being lonely. Speaking about it wouldn't bring them back. Neither could he truly stay here too long. There were things in place that he had to do. Ends he had to meet, no matter the cost. He took her hand and gave it a light squeeze, but removed it quickly enough. He had no right to tender moments with a woman. Not after the things he had done.

"If you don't mind me asking, Lady Forthwind, what exactly did she do that is so terrible?" He looked away, into the distance, his cheery demeanour refusing to melt. "You don't have to answer, but I might be able to offer some perspective."

Oswin's smile was unbalancing, but Melari appreciated the quick squeeze to her hand. At his question, however, the girl blushed and looked to her feet. "Um..."

What to say? Dem had already received the full confession, and Mel wasn't sure how many people ought to know. She guessed not many, but Oswin was nice. And he was a twin! It was possible that he could offer better perspective than even her brother could, so after some hesitation the lady continued, almost reluctantly. "Well..."

She didn't lift her eyes, embarrassed. "I was getting love letters from an anonymous someone. When Serai found out she forged my handwriting and sent a letter back, asking to meet. She went in my place."

Mel's cheeks were red. "And then she came back and she won't tell me who he was or what they said, and she took my letters and threw them in the fire."

She was so sincere about it that Oswin couldn't help but feel this was really that important to her. Melari was, though, a fair bit younger than him. He had to remind himself that at that age, everything was the end of the world and people weren't as complicated as they could be. At least, that's how he had been at her age. She did seem to be a bit wiser than her years at least.

"Forgive me for being impudent, Lady Melari, but is that truly so unforgiveable? It may seem wrong of her, but really, it could have been anyone who wrote those letters. Your sister may have done it for your own safety. I know there was a time my brother..." He realised he was about to say something that might have been a give away for his family. He couldn't let the tenuous link be forged, or his niece would be in trouble. Best to keep it vague. "He went in my place somewhere for me. Turned out it saved my life."

"I want to believe that it was for my own good." Mel's answer was honest, but still she did not look at him. "I really do. But Serai....I don't know. Her personality sometimes makes me wonder. She always needs to be on top, and she'll say things that don't need to be said, and..."

The girl rubbed at the back of her head. "She's my twin. We were best friends for as long as we've been alive. She, of all people, should have known that I wouldn't have gone to meet a stranger. My Writer never asked it of me and I never offered; we were content just to talk to each other. If he had asked, I would have told my brother. I supposed there was a reason he didn't come forward openly: perhaps he was poor, or ugly, or old; perhaps there was some shame attached to him he didn't want revealed. But what he wrote to me was honorable in every way and he trusted me. Serai went far out of bounds to lure him into such a trap and I'm afraid she was cruel to him. That's not who I am. My honor, my character, is something I never want to be called into question. I don't toy with people. I don't see letters or flirtations as a meaningless game and I certainly don't punish people who regard me in that light. You say anyone could have written those letters and that's true -- but 'anyone' means there's a chance my Writer had genuine feelings for me and he was left hurting. It's wrong. And I don't know how to right it."

She pulled up a tuft of grass. "I miss talking to him."

Oswin's face fell as she spoke. He had felt "Oswin" slipping as they spoke, his personality slipping back to that he once was. The man who was in awe that he spoke to one who still held to honour, the one that was enraptured with her character. But also the indecisive one who could say naught but:

"I'm sorry, milady."

Then there was an opportunity. Oswin clicked back into place at the realisation that all was not simply lost. She wanted to meet someone. He was able and free to track them, especially for his friend's family. His mind began to whirr through possibilities, a plan forming. For even had his "other" self not wanted to help her, Oswin did. He was louder these days.

"The letters, did you send them by bird or by courier? Do you know where they were going to?" Oswin looked up at her, a true smile on his face and lighting his eyes "I have experience in tracking people. As long as you have a starting point, I can find him."

Mel lit up, jumping to her feet with a new happiness in her eyes. "Really? You would?! We had a safe place, a secret place where I'd leave my letters and look for his, just under a loose stone behind the stables. I don't know where they came from but I...I suspected..."

She blushed. "I thought the falconer might have somehow been involved. He always seemed to be there in the background when I went to see."

Oswin couldn't help but smile in response to her jubilant reaction. How could any help but be inspired at seeing someone so happy? She had at least a good lead. Tracking it from there would be good enough. Already he was planning the lines back to the people, the way he had been trained. It was nice to focus on work rather than his crumbled family.

"The falconer? A good start, were he there each time. He must have seen something." He stopped briefly. This may be easier than he thought if it was this simple, but he couldn't help but ask "You don't suppose the falconer may have been your mystery correspondant, do you?"

"I thought about it." Melari blushed, tossing her handful of grass aside. "He's a very kind man and rather handsome, if a bit old, but I don't think he knows how to read or write...at least not as eloquently as my Writer did. My Writer had a pretty extensive vocabulary and I think most of our hands here know just enough to keep records of the animals and fields and such."

A quick chuckle came from Oswin. It was warm, heartfelt and genuine. A novelty with the mood he was in, but he did feel good at being able to help someone besides himself. How long had it been since he could claim that? Far too long if he had to think.

"A shame. That would make it far too easy." He arose from his seated position and made a light bow to Melari, fired up and intending to track this man now, even as it threatened to grow dark. "I'll leave immediately, if you wish it, Milady? I wouldn't want to waste any time idling."

"There isn't a rush." Mel smiled at him, her expression warm as she moved closer. "It's just kind of you to do this at all. Thank you."

She offered her new friend a hug, pulling back to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear a little sheepishly. "You can just call me Melari, you know. Or Mel. I don't mind it from my friends."
