They would be at the city of Ryka the next day. There weren't just the usual men-at-arms accompanying a party of House Mallory- Rhaegar had brought ten of his own men who had come with him from the Second Sons. They had fought together for years, and knew how to work together- more importantly they trusted each other. Rhaegar did not trust his cousins' men. They'd never fought a war, never even made it through a battle beyond ambushing the Mar-Stellars- a house of teenagers and useless lords who knew more about gods than swords.
Rhaegar sat at a table in his pavilion, his companions gathered around as they all went over the map of Ryka and its surrounding lands. "The bastard's made it a bloody fortress. You'll need more troops than we've got to take it." The speaker rubbed his hand on his beard. Vidanric was from some island nation half across the world where colors were bright and jewelry gaudy. He looked like a walking collection of baubles half the time. "We don't have to take it today. We have to get one of them to tell you what I want to hear. While Zach keeps Debiel talking I want you lot to get in with his sellswords. There's going to be a fat purse and a bigger reward than that if one of them wants to sell him out for a traitor. Him or his son. We need proof that they killed Odelia." "A torn up Mallory tunic in the son's rooms, if we can get to search the place?" Olyvar Tallheart suggested. "Or someone get some unhappy maid to do the finding. Bit o' charm never hurt at that sort of game." Rhaegar nodded. "That too. I need witnesses to take to the king, not bodies. Those come later. This little scouting expedition's just the beginning. We'll have Ryka in ashes by the spring festival..." He stopped as he caught the sound of approaching footsteps outside. A page entered and bowed low to announce that Zach was on his way. "Good of your cousin to be joining the likes of us at all," Olyvar said with a faint smirk. "Behave, Oly." Vidranric looked at Rhaegar. "Does he know what this is about?" "I'm sure he does. I don't know if he approves, but it's Christopher's orders we march on." |

Zach had been filled in, briefly, on what was meant to go down, but to most of his questions, the answer had been to ask Rhaeger. That was the sort of freedom that was not offered to many, if any, in the Mallory house under Chris' rule, because he was so on the ball. It didn't fill him with much confidence in the situation. But he would never question Chris's word.
As he arrived infront of the, to his eyes, questionable assortment of vagabonds that were here with Rhaeger, Zach truly started to have misgivings. He had brought along only a couple of his own guards, but they were dressed in the best armour and weapons he could dig up and with a small feather clasp securing their travelling capes about their necks. They had the Mallory crest emblazoned upon their armour, but those two feathers were the only such constructs in existence - to denote his personal bodyguards for this trip. It made more of a lasting impression on people if they thought that all his guards and forces were dressed this way. Instead, they would now look completely mismatched and stick out like a sore thumb. It concerned him that instead of a formal army, in Mallory colours, they were here in all sorts. His expression was unusually grim, his speech curt and to the point. Clearly, Zach was not in his element here. He nodded curtly to the other people around, but mostly kept his attention on Rhaeger. "Chris tells me you know the way. Lead on, cousin." |

Rhaegar's men watched Zacharias with impassive eyes though it went without saying they were studying him as closely as an enemy on the horizon. Rhaegar himself gestured to one of the empty chairs. "Make yourself comfortable, cousin. We'll be at the Debiel gates tomorrow- we'll leave at dawn. I wanted to ensure you knew our plan."
Rhaegar gestured to his men. "You will go on as the official envoy with your honor guard. My men are merely added protection you've taken on with the Ursai faithful getting so unruly along the roads in these parts." He was sure that those faithful were drawing aid from Ryka but they could take of that little mess later. "While you keep Debiel and his son in lively conversation, Vidanrik and Olyvar are going to make some discreet inquiries. By the time we leave we should have enough proof of the Debiel treachery to take to Alrik and let him decide. Then we come back and raze the gods-damned place." That got a rare smile from Rhaegar and a few enthusiastic nods from the other men present. "We'll leave some of our men out here. If Debiel gets any bright ideas about holding us, and I don't send a raven to Orqua tomorrow afternoon, Chris will be sending the army this way without a second thought. Just keep your diplomatic face on, Zachary, and this will soon be over." |

Zach cast an easy glance out through Rhaeger's men as he took a seat. Here was really about the furthest away from where he wanted to be. Especially when Rhaeger had done detailing the plan. So, he had gone from being responsible in the operation to...being bait? Wonderful. He wafted his fan lightly, trying his best to keep his cool and remind himself that Rhaeger would not be telling him this if it was not Christopher's plan.
All he could really do was go along with it. Zach refused to be seen to be a fool infront of Rhaeger and his motley band, so he simply smiled and asked the most routine and confident question he could think of. "I can buy you the time, easily. How long do you need?" |
