Default A Not So Cheery Tea Time (Ysolda and Mason, 10/5, evening, on a boat, mofos)

Ysolda had sent the invitation early that morning to her brother to tea. She hadn't spoken with him nearly enough since they had left Solbra for the first time, both so busy with their own. And here they were, nearly the last ones standing of their family.

She knew there'd be a lot for the both of them to do once they got to Orqua. Ysolda had to tell Claire about Alrik's arrangement, and she supposed, plan her wedding. The job of the Urson included most of the funeral rites of the highest born, but she imagined it must be even more difficult to plan when it was your own brother. Mason and Devin had a very complicated relationship, but they were still brothers, right? So she decided the best thing to do was to have tea on the ship. It was not the most lavish of accommodations, but it would do for a nice talk.

She was just making sure everything was arranged correctly when she heard the servant rise to answer the door. She stood to greet Mason as he walked in.

Mason had received his sister's invitation to evening tea, sometime in the early morning. Ysolda was the only person who had continued to talk to him through out the years, in the family, and they'd lost touch which saddened him. He'd exchanged words, with Devin but they were never more the the polite formalities of court, but that was how the two as brothers, always were.

He was still writing Devin's funeral plans, along with his son's, but the time came near for him to meet his sister, so he rose and wandered out of his room. Was it wrong that nothing really saddened him anymore? Izzy would tell him, yes. But as Urson, he saw death every day, this time it was at his door, taking one of his own.

The servant allowed him entrance into Ysolda's parlor, and he thanked him for his introduction and walked inside. He saw his sister standing to greet him and a smile crossed his face for the first time on this day. He held out his arms to her. "Ysolda, thank you for the invitation to spend time with you, my dearest sister."

"Of course," she said, gesturing him to his seat and taking hers. The tea had been laid out by the servants and they were already pouring it. "I just thought... well, I wanted to see you. You know, with everything that's been happening." He would understand.

"How have you been? And Isadore, how is she?" Ysolda liked Isadore, how could anyone not? And she wasn't sure she wanted to jump into everything just yet, although, really, the wedding was the main topic of conversation for anyone at it, and even most of those not at it.

Taking his seat at the table, he watched the servants hustle around getting their tea poured and getting out of their way. He knew their conversation wouldn't be all happy words, but he smiled and tried his best to keep a happy look on his face.

"Too much has happened in such a small amount of time, I do agree." He nodded to the servants as they hustled off and away from the table. "Isadore and I have been great. We're keeping busy with all the children in the temples, and Isadore has been bustling around trying to make sure the temples are well funded and well supplied. She's a tough one, she more then cuts my work in half, she runs circles around me!" he said chuckling. "She keeps me sane."

He took a sip of his tea and set the cup back down. "How have you been? And the children how are they?"

"The children are well. Cynthia helped in a surgery in Vadra... she's been bubbling about it ever since! Well... we left Claire in Solbra, of course, but she's to meet us in Orqua. She dearly loved Devin." Well, there, so much for smalltalk. But it was hard not to talk about it these days.

"Alrik has arranged her a marriage... with one of the Mallory cousins. He helped us during the feast, I think it will be good for her. But I will have to tell her when we arrive..."

"That's wonderful to hear that she's so happy to help!" he smiled and took a sip of his tea, but at the mention of Devin he frowned. "My brother and I, we weren't very close, and I regret that. We had our differences that stopped us from being the friends we should have been, we were both at fault. Maybe I was moreso, because I'm sure I could have tried harder. He will be missed by many."

He set his teacup down gently, and folded his hands in his lap. Nodding as she explained Clair's situation. "So she does not know then?" he asked raising his eyebrows.

Ysolda shook her head sadly. "No, I thought it best not to tell her by letter, tell her in person. Plus, you know, she'd have left Solbra by the time I could send out a crow."

"I'm sorry you two never had the chance to patch things up between you." She thought of the peace she had come to with her father before he died, and how much that helped her deal with it. Mason would never have that luxury with Devin. "I'm sure no matter how much trouble you too had, nothing could fully break the bonds brothers have."

He nodded quietly as Ysolda spoke, she always had a gentle way of putting everything into words. "You're right, it may be best to tell her in person. For her, this will be very painful, she is young and has not experienced much in life yet."

"I am sure you're right, again." he said with a chuckle. "Devin and I got along, and it could have been much worse!" A sad smile found it's way to Mason's lips. "I shall give him his last rights. How do you feel about that?" He made eye contact with his sister, a sort of resolve clear on his face.

Ysolda smiled. "It's only right that you do. I had hoped - but it wasn't my decision, and I didn't want to bother the King. But I should have known he'd make the right decision."

"It will be a difficult time for all of us, and I can't imagine someone better to guide us through that. And I'm sure our dear sister-in-law feels the same." Ysolda had been worried about Adeline, to lose a husband and a son... it wasn't something Ysolda could even comprehend.

Mason shifted in his chair, nodding in agreement with Ysolda. "It is only right. The king is an understanding man." He knew that he didn't have to explain.

He couldn't imagine the pain that Adeline was going through, he didn't want to think of losing Isadore. "You have a good point, sister. I will do my best to make sure that all needs are met and our brother and nephew's memories are honored properly."

He couldn't imagine losing a child either, though he'd never wanted any, that was Isadore's desire. He felt he'd had enough orphans to chase around all day, he didn't need more headaches.
