This letter is scribbled in Eli's familiar handwriting. Entrusted to a former page, Eli's instructions were succinct - make sure this letter is received into only the hands of the women to which it is addressed.
My darling girls,
Lord Rex Letalis has fallen. No doubt by the time this letter reaches you, word may yet have passed by your ear of this dreadful news. I am safe. I am returning to you with haste. Although the news I bear you may be of no surprise, I sincerely hope it has caught you in time.
DO NOT return to the capital without my word. I have my concerns -- and if they are unfounded, then so be it. But it would rest my heart easy if you remained within the relative safety of Torrna. Esme, keep your correspondence with Lord Haven to a minimum. Do not tread far from the city. Wait for my return.
