View Full Version : Some news that might be of interest (6/10, afternoon, Roma, Elodie)

Roma had nearly laughed when Jacques had asked her to take care of this little issue. Of course, it happened often enough. Women were often involved in telling their daughters about betrothals, to soften the blow a bit. It was a bit odd, telling the girl when she was not her mother, but it was alright. Perhaps she could convince Elodie to be excited about it. He was a fine knight, after all, wasn't that what every girl wanted?
She had the servants lay out some sweets, and then had them fetch Elodie. She hoped Elodie would not give the girl too much trouble, but she had a reputation for dodging the help. She wasn't sure how long it was before the servant returned, presumably unharmed, with Roma's stepdaughter in tow. "Lady Elodie, here for you, My Lady," the servant announced.

She'd given it her best attempt, but Lord Harrowmont's servants were drattedly hard to outmaneuver. It was this stupid castle- she just couldn't keep her bearings in the blasted place. All sorts of corridors coming and going and twisting and she was half certain they had nothing to do with the shape the castle looked to be on the outside.
"Lady Roma," Elodie said as the servant showed her in. She curtsied too, to be polite. "You sent for me?" She didn't sound entirely thrilled about that. Elodie was dressed well, but her shoes were scuffed, and the hem of her damask dress was dirty from the games they'd been playing in the garden. She'd resorted to some of the knights' daughters for company.

She looked the girl over and smiled. She wouldn't scold her for getting her dress dirty, but if Jacques had wanted her to meet with her betrothed later in the day, she would have to get cleaned up. "Lady Elodie, sit." If Elodie hadn't sounded thrilled now, just wait until she heard what Roma had to say.
"Your father sent me to give you some news. I'm assuming you are familiar with Ser Rhovanion Seldior? And that your father has given him the position of Lord of Vyrna?"

Elodie took the indicated seat, distracted and partially mollified by the presence of sweets. "Yes, m'lady. He used to be my guard sometimes..." And Alysenne wants to kiss him. "And yes, I talked to him about being lord. He's not all that good at courtly graces... he's very chivalrous but he doesn't know any dances at all, and--" Elodie stopped, and her blue eyes grew a bit wary. Why were they talking about Rhovanion.
"Oh no... did something happen? Is he all right?" People were always getting kidnapped or killed or burned alive or something around here...

"Oh, no, dear, everything is fine with Lord Seldior." Well, everything, perhaps, aside from being betrothed to Lord Ashpool's infamously impetuous youngest daughter. "My father merely wished to inform you that... you and Lord Rhovanion are to be wed."
She didn't even let a moment pass before she qualified. "When you are of age, of course. So you have plenty of time, to..." get used to the idea, she was sure she meant but didn't want to say. She sat back, sipped her tea, and waited.

Elodie went still, and searched her step-mother's face. She had to be joking. She just had to be joking...
"What do you mean... wed... used to... WHAT?? I can't! They ca-- I'm not--" She put down the cup harder than was necessary and stood up, pushing away from the table. "He's a knight! I can't marry a knight!!"

Roma had been expecting something of this sort. She smiled lightly and sipped her tea, very few things Elodie could do would phase Roma. "He is not a knight any longer, he is a Lord now. And he will be a good one. He is young, and handsome, and valiant. Isn't that what every young maiden wants for a husband?"
